“I’ve been itching for a while [to create something new]. When we finished Unreal Tournament I wanted to do another game. It’s just a matter of opportunity and figuring things out. So all hands are on Gears right now, in the foreseeable future. But, we’ll see how things go,” Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski told Industry Gamers. Let’s hope it’s a multiplatform “itch”. All over the internet, you’ll hear the same cry: Microsoft has forgotten the hardcore and turned Xbox 360 into a Kinect circus. Is this accusation true? Too many it is, but to the company’s Xbox UK boss Stephen McGill, that’s quiet a lie, as he assures the hardcore will never be left behind.
When does a game trailer stop being an advert and instead become a work of art in it’s own right?
Sometimes unfortunate things happen that are just beyond one’s control, and when those things happen, we have to deal with them in the best way possible. But there are other times when people try to do you harm for no apparent reason, and it’s in those times you have to be even stronger, or else you might just go mental and do crazy things.
The latter’s apparently the case with Gears of War composer, Kevin Riepl. On October 6th he said via tweeter that he thought someone “roofied” him while out drinking. He’d blacked out. “Somethings effed up,” he continued. “Like literally. Something knocked me out.” Days later, Riepl was on life support.
Not many new IPs come out and shine the first time around. First, most gamers wouldn’t have heard of it, and even if they did, some rather stay in their comfort zone: “I’ll play what I know,” they say.
That’s why it’s rare developers create new IPs, because they know how expensive it is to first, spend millions to develop the game, then spend even more to get the word out, and finally wait with fingers crossed to see if it’s well received.
