by Ernice Gilbert on June 22nd, 2011, under News, PS Vita, Sony

The 3DS was supposed to eternally and universal lay Sony’s veteran PSP to rest. At least in Japan, and the first week the new handheld console went on sale, you think it’d do just that. But that’s not the case at all. In fact in a rather surprising turn of events, Sony’s PSP is not only staying in the race, but is beating Nintendo’s new device for top spot in Japan’s hardware sales chart, while maintaining close positions on the software side of things also.

I think it’s safe to say Nintendo’s carved out a demographic for itself that no other gaming company seems to be able to snatch. It’s like the same group of people keep buying the firm’s products over and over to the tune of billions of dollars.

But there’s another group that’s been lacking in the handheld realm, and according to EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich, with NGP and Xperia Play, Sony stands the chance of winning that group, outperforming even Nintendo’s 3DS.
