Within Valve’s Source Filmmaker program, some lines of code and files reference a next-gen engine, referred to as Source 2. As revealed by Valvetime.net, the new engine is in development and will be included in Filmmaker.
One line, for example, reads; “Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn’t doesn’t exist, assume ‘Source’, otherwise invalid — assume next-gen ‘Source 2′.”
Valve’s Source engine debutted with Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 back in 2004, and has since evolved, featuring a lot of improvements, from technical fixes and upgrades to support for multiple platforms.
Filmmaker launched last month on Steam, for free, and allows the creation of movies within Source, using assets from Valve games like Team Fortress 2.
Is this the reason why Half-Life 3 is taking that long to come out? The engine is further teased, with Valve saying “We don’t like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there,” on the company’s official site. “And it’s about to get even better.” Hopefully, even better means Source 2.

not holding my breath, but yea i wouldent be surprised if one of next gen launch titles is indeed HL3 running on a all new source engine!
i honestly dont care what or where valve release it, just name it and everyone will go buy it!
been FAR too long since we heard something about half life!
