Hideki Kamiya openly attacks Battle Royale

ps allstars battle royale

Hideki Kamiya, director and designer who worked on games like Resident Evil and Okami, unleashed very nasty words against Sony’s upcoming brawl cross-over, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. In his tweets, Kamiya claimed Battle Royale to be a rip-off of Smash Bros, said he wouldn’t want Viewtiful Joe to appear in it, and just stated he doesn’t like rip-offs.

Kamiya is now working at Platinum Games, and has also worked on Bayonetta, but is confirmed to not be a part of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, as we all thought he would initially be. However, his general attitude seems a little arrogant, if you don’t mind taking a look at his other tweets, responding very harshly or even using profanity against kind fans. When asked about Bayonetta being all too similar to Devil May Cry or God of War, he simply replied in an improper manner, when fans just pointed out that it looks very similar to the aforementioned games, and didn’t discuss on how it plays. Kamiya did the same, discussing only the surface of Battle Royale, and while he is the director of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta is conceptually almost identical to it; on the “surface”, if you’d like. Devil May Cry also heavily borrows from Onimusha: Warlords, which was released a year prior to it.

A screenshot of some of his tweets appears below.

Maybe it is a ripoff, but I dont give a truck!! I dont like Nintendo consoles and I want a mash up fighter for my Sony system. As and ye shall receive! Now if they would only listen and give us a new Syphon Filter!!!!

In Sony’s words; “we never abandon an IP”. Whatever that means, I know we’ll get at least one revival. While MGS5 is 99% a PS3/PS4 exclusive, Sony would want to get another reboot of Syphon Filter to go with PS4′s launch, so that it attracts players from the stealth genre, that do not want to get to read/play MGS’s convoluted and long plot.

I agree with Benzo, it may appear to be a rip-off but as long as the gameplay mechanics are on par or better than Smash Bros., and it has some form of individuality should it really matter? I also don’t particularly play my Wii either, the only game I play on it frequently is Smash Bros when friends come over., and I will not buy another Nintendo system just to play the next iteration. I for one welcome this new IP, and will probably write my impressions of the beta if it isn’t under NDA.

As for Kamiya, I feel like some of his comments as a game designer were harsh. One person asked him why he didn’t like it, and to at least try it out since it’s different, with Kamiya’s response being “That’s good.”

Well as long as it fun, i have no problem with it being a Rip-Off, but i’m sure that they’re no stupid enough to Completely Rip it off.

If people didn’t adapt, and take what they have and evolve it instead of thinking “hey that’s not original, I shall make the same thing from the ground up instead of improving upon it”, we would not be talking today, or we would have fantastic meetings in our grand caves.

I agree with all of you! What, is PS All-Stars the first game to take some ideas from another? Childish comments from the dev, there.
