Guerrilla On PS3: There’s Still Juice In There, We Simply Need To Find It

by Ernice Gilbert on October 2nd, 2010, under Guerrilla Games, Hot, News, Sony

Back in Killzone 2′s time, Guerrilla Games said they were pushing the PS3 on all cylinders, claiming to have “maxed out” Sony’s next gen system. But things changed swiftly when Uncharted 2 and God of War III came out, according to Guerrilla Games Steven Ter Heide: “It’s like, okay, there’s a little bit more power in there and we need to find it,” he said recently.

It was at the Eurogamer Expo the developer explained what had happened, adding that now they all, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and other Sony first party teams work together.

“I certainly hope so,” Ter Heide replied when asked if he’d like gamers to crown Killzone 3 as the best looking game. “At the time, with Killzone 2, we said we’re firing on all cylinders and we’re maxing out the PlayStation 3, and this is as good as it’s going to get. But then Uncharted 2 comes along, and God of War 3 comes along. It’s like, okay, there’s a little bit more power in there and we need to find it.”

“The guys go back and they look at stuff. We find ways of doing things smarter and differently. We talk to the guys at Naughty Dog. We talk to the Santa Monica guys. We learn from each other. We’re all different games. I’ve seen a couple of comments where they said you’ve used the Naughty Dog snow. It doesn’t work like that. We can’t get a bucket of snow from Naughty Dog and put it in our game. They’re different games. Different technologies.

But of course we look at their tricks and what things they employ and see if that could apply to our stuff. And vice versa. There’s a lot of knowledge sharing, but it’s very low level and more about what the experience is like rather than code being transferred from one game to another. It simply doesn’t work like that unfortunately. I wish it would, but unfortunately it doesn’t. We have to write it all ourselves.”

It all looks promising, folks. Buy KZ3 on February 22nd in the U.S., no solid date has been announced for Europe.

I think GG are gonna set a new graphical benchmark and then ND will top it. Then the process will begin again. Infamous 2 and other PS3 exclusives will look great as well.

I agree. I think it’ll be maxed when Uncharted 3 arrives. What do you think?

Uncharted 3 will be the best looking console game ever on any platform upon it’s release thereby setting a new graphical benchmark but I’m not sure if the PS3 will be maxed at that point, it could be though. I mean if anyone can do it, it’s ND.

its not they have to find it, its developing the right tools.
anyone with even the slightest programming skills could max out the ps3, its refining your code, taking a simple instruction and changing it from taking 3 lines of code to only taking 2.
thats what separates the programmers from the great programmers.
anyone can make a program work, but only a select few can make the same program work but in half the code!
less code, less tax on the hardware.

Your TAFE learning are beginning to show, Nick. I see you as being the next Kojiam — Naughty Dog or Santa Monica… What will you name your studio? Silent Knight Productions? That sounds good doesn’t it?

    LOL………. thanks!
id be happy if i was half that good!
never know, would be a dream come true!
it does, i dont think ill start my own studio though too risky, and these days its really hard to get a publisher.
biggest hurdle i have to climb is getting a job.
the only game development studio in the state i live in is team bondi.
i really dont want to move overseas, have too many relatives school and work friends to leave behind.
