Implementing Campaign Co-op “Is A Lot Of Work” Admits Guerrilla Games

Ah, single player co-op, it’s the most addicting part of any game that boasts it. Nothing would be better than gunning down merciless Helghast with your best friend or brother, and Guerrilla Games knows it. I’m sure the developer would love to include said feature as part of Killzone 3, but according to the game’s producer Steven Ter Heide, “it’s a lot of work”.

That’s after he said at his Euro Expo presentation “who knows?” if campaign co-op would make it into the game. In the interview, however, the exec was more forthcoming.

“Co-op is a lot of work,” he said. “It is.”

“If you have two guys running around in the world the AI has to respond to that and the world has to respond to that. That is work. Initially everything is focused on one guy. All of a sudden there are two standing next to each other.

Who do you focus on? Where does the fire come from? How does the gameplay change? You have to invent new systems for, what if one player jumps ahead? Or the other one is stuck? Or you can’t get to each other? Doors close behind you. Doors open up in front of you. It’s simple things initially you don’t think about but it’s a heck of a lot of work to get that going.”

At least he’s being straightforward about the situation, although I’m not pleased with what might be the results. Still, I wonder how much time it took to implement 3D, or even Move functionality.

Surely they’d be done with the co-op campaign portion of the game if they were not dead focused on other things gamers don’t seem to care for the moment.

Co-op would be cool but not a deal breaker if it doesn’t make it in the final build.

Yeah, not a deal breaker for me at all, but like you said, it’d be cool.
