Kotaku revealed today that Doom 4, after being in limbo for over 5 years, had been moved to next-gen with no release date in sight. The site also caught wind of Rage 2′s cancellation and just moments after, Bethesda confirmed to Eurogamer that indeed, the rumors were true.
“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda’s marketing boss Pete Hines said in a new statement.
“As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know.”
As for Rage 2, since the first game didn’t meet Bethesda and ZeniMax’s sales expectations, the game was cancelled and plans for Rage DLC has been downsized. All staff are now hard at work on Doom 4.
