Disney’s stunned the games industry by announcing that one of the world’s most recognizable brands, Lucas Arts, would be no more, and that Star Wars 1313, the E3 2012 showstopper, and Star Wars: First Assault have been cancelled.
A Disney representative confirmed the news to GameInformer in a statement. It reads:
After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games.
As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.
Although the GameInformer article doesn’t mention how many people were affected, Kotaku is reporting that 150 employees have been made redundant. Lucas Arts was established in 1982.
