Sony Sends Out PSP2 Dev Kits To Developers, Will Release In 2011

by Ernice Gilbert on September 27th, 2010, under Breaking News, Hot, Sony

Recently, rumor flooded the internet concerning a certain developer claiming it had already received a PSP2 dev kit. Mortal Kombat reboot Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick was not lying.

Apparently, Sony’s sent out PSP2 dev kits to developers across the industry.

According to Develop-Online, the hardware giant’s handed out PSP2 development kits to a number of key studios for a “significant launch window line-up”.

The kits went out not only to in house studios, but also third party partners. According to sources close to the site, “Sony is spreading its PSP2 tech widely across the industry for a big impact at launch”.

The new handheld will be made available in 2011, crossing paths with Nintendo’s upcoming handheld, the 3DS. Kits for that device are already in circulation across the industry.

We’ll keep you posted as more information surfaces.

great, this now makes me reluctant to buy a PSP for ghost of Sparta.
why would sony release their most popular franchise on old hardware?
yea, ok they did it with GOW2 but that was because development started before the ps3 came out and they wanted to stick to that platform because they knew not many people were going to spend 1000 bucks on a new system.
the PSP2 is different, well i hope, because if its 1000 bucks here sonys going to sink faster than the titanic!
they have really put themselves into a sticky situation with the ps3, the PSP2 cant be more expensive because come on a handheld cant be more expensive to make than a console.
the go is already a rip off at 450 bucks 50 bucks cheaper than the ps3, so id guess that would be the release price.
but at that sony are going to have a real hard time selling units, even if the launch lineup is fantastic which sony has never been able to manage.

I’m hoping they’ve already thought this out, though. It looks like Sony’s trying to slow the 3DS train, here, by basically announcing the handheld, it should be a good fight to watch.

there not going to slow the train, there not even going to put a chip in it!
nintendo is one company sony can not compete with.
the 3Ds has as the name suggests 3D support, now sony has been quite vocal on their dislike of glasses free 3D as of late so i seriously doubt the PSP2 will support 3D.
so theres that front, than theres the one sony will always struggle with.
nintys name brand, ninty is seen as a family console so no matter what they release its going to sell like hotcakes!
parents buy them for their kids because there seen as a more kid friendly brand which is quite fair when you think about their exclusives.
mario, zelda, donky kong, there are very few adult games on the other hand sonys lineup is almost built of them!
thats the reason why sony can never compete with ninty, they will always end up walking over them!
they have the kids market down pact, and they have some of the adult market.
so ninty are effectively getting the best of both worlds, having 2 bites of the cherry where sony are only getting one.

True, it’s hard to compete against Nintendo that’s for sure.
