Where there’s smoke, remember there’s always fire. All the PSP2 talk that has been permeating the web recently are not just wild fantasies of gamers and journalists hoping their dreams would come true. Apparently. They’re real.
According to Eurogamer, the PSP2 will be sized almost the same as PSP 3000, and will sport touch sensitive controls on the reverse unit.
Three separate development sources close to the site who have seen and used the PSP2, said the screen is rich and detailed but the headline feature is the way games are controlled – by a touch-sensitive area on the back of the unit behind the screen.
It goes on to say that Sony is currently showcasing the unfinished handheld to publishers using several first-party games and has already settled on its business model for the device.
One source said that they expect the handheld to release by 2011, while another wasn’t so sure. For that source, the device won’t be available at least for the next couple of years.
When Eurogamer reached out to Sony, PR gave them the usual answer: “we don’t comment on rumor and speculation”.

fake!
how do i know?
if sony has said anything about themselves is there 100% positive you cant play games without buttons, and there right!
look at the Iphone, playing allot of games is a pain in the a$$! because you have no buttons.
your constantly swiping your finger across the screen when you want to move the camera, or using the oversensitive accelerometer.
plus at E3 last year just after revealing the PSP go during a interview a sony rep did say the next PSP would have 2 analogue sticks, and explained they did not do it with go because they wanted games to be backwards compatible with the device.
ill be extremely shocked if the psp2 is touchscreen only.
touchscreens are a novelty, they have there uses but gaming is certainly not one of them!
I will not by the PSP2 if it’s touch screen only.
I think they’re saying it will have touch controls IN ADDITION to the standard button layout of the current PSP.
whats the point of having a touch sensitive area behind the PSP?
just seems stupid to me, how are you suppose to see what your pressing?
unless its one flat face, but i really can not see the point of it.
as i said touch screens are nothing but a novelty!
Yeah ExclusivesMostly, that makes more sense.
Initially there’s gonna be a learning curve. Remember when you were first exposed to typing? You had to constantly look down at the keys and now you pretty much never need to look down at them, you just know where they are. Also I don’t think the majority of games will integrate touch controls (at least not as the main control scheme, maybe a side mission here and there). It’s just gonna be for specific titles that it
make sense to integrate them in. I also think that the touch panel is gonna be used more like a touch pad on a laptop: just for navigating the web browser for instance. Should be pretty cool really.
Oh and with touch panel on the back you never have to worry about finger prints etc on the screen as much.
Yeah, that’s a good you point that out.
Should be, I wonder if the PSPPhone is the same thing, or another beast altogether.
Hmmm…You know what…it could go either way. I’m leaning toward two separate devices though.
Yeah, me too. Still, we’ll have to wait and see.
problem is touch sensitive pads are still quite expensive, there just adding cost for more or less no reason what so ever!
for the PSP phone it would be cool, but for the PSP2 its just adding cost for no reason what so ever.
you have to remember the PSP2 is going to be quite a powerful beast so its going to be bloody expensive as it is!
sony needs to cut costs wherever they can.
Lowering costs must be at the forefront of things.. .Still, we never know who much the thing will cost, and the technology it’ll be using.
Yeah good points guys but I think Sony has learned their lesson from the bad start of the PS3 and the more recent PSPgo.
