Report: Killzone 2 was meant to actually be 3

Killzone 2 was originally planned to be Killzone 3, one of the game’s designers has revealed, letting loose the thought that a Playstation 2 entry for the franchise was cancelled.

Talking about his career with Pixel Enemy, ex-Guerrilla Games’ David Goldfarb, the now-game director for Payday 2, revealed that he “was the first designer on what was originally Killzone 3 that then became Killzone 2.”

“There’s a story there that I can’t tell, so maybe you’ll have to edit this.”

This leads to the question; was a sequel to the original Killzone, which launched on Playstation 2, in development for that same console, but was cancelled to make way for a Playstation 3 entry? Given how the game was revealed during E3 2005 for the Playstation 3, but was never referred to as “Killzone 2″, but rather “Killzone”, it might be possible. The game later launched in early 2009, with the official third entry launching in early 2011.
