Some PC Gamers Need To Just Shut Up About PS4
Killzone Shadow: Fall is GG's PS4 title using only 1.GB of VRAM - PS4 has 8 to spare.

Some PC Gamers Need To Just Shut Up About PS4

I’m annoyed.

Never thought much of PC gaming. Though I never had anything against the group, (or anyone for that matter) I simply was never enticed by the platform for games since I mostly use it for others things. You know, things like working on my website, sending email back and forth – and you know… using the internet – stuff like that. The personal computer is a beast, the best piece of invention we’ve ever had and we thank God for it, right? Yes. Some of the people who play videogames on it, though, I can’t stand them now… not since the announcement of PS4 at least, when suddenly they started coming out of the woodwork with insulting lingo directed towards Sony’s new console, PlayStation 4.

On almost every website you venture, every forum you scan, every topic where PlayStation 4 is being discussed, these “gamers” find their way there and start talking elitist crap like, “oh, whatever, PS4 is weaker than my two-year old PC”, or totally uninformed rubbish like “ah, Crysis 3 looks better than anything PS4 will be able to produce”. They even go further, talking up trash about consoles on a whole, saying PC is where “true” gaming is, and soon consoles will be abolished. All irrelevant talk, to be sure, but it’s irked me to a point of explosion. If your platform is better, there’s no need to make a case for it… If indeed true gaming is on PC, console gamers, by the millions, would have jumped on board already – but it’s simply not. PC gaming isn’t as popular as these jokers would have you believe.

PS4′s Infamous: Second Son – in-game footage

Why do you think almost every popular game there is sell the most units on consoles? Yes, almost every game that’s released multiplatform see a huge disparity in sales, with the least sold units being on PC. Why is that? Why is it that one of PC’s biggest franchise, Crysis 2, sold more units on PS3 and Xbox 360 (not combined sales, rather per console) than it did on PC? It’s because the platform is not as popular as these elitist would have you believe!

Crysis 2 PC

Crysis 2 PS3

Crysis 2 Xbox 360

See what I mean? The biggest PC franchise does a shameful 600,000 units lifetime sales, while PS3 and Xbox 360 both hit over 1 million…

… Let’s look at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It’s a game PC gamers swear was made solely for their platform, however it’s also on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Skyrim PS3 – 4.47 Million Units Sold

Skyrim Xbox 360 – 7.04 million Units Sold

Skyrim PC – 2.75 Million Units Sold

How the hell are developers supposed to think of the PC market as the best thing since watermelon when multiplatform games on consoles constantly, utterly, outsell the platform? Why? Because games look better on there? Speaking of which…

Killzone: Shadow Fall In-game footage

Killzone: Shadow Fall In-game footage

… These PC elitists, if they wish to spend thousands of dollars on a PC rig, that’s good for them, but most gamers don’t have all that cash to spend trying to make games look better with expensive chips, and even if they did, I suspect it’s not a top priority. You must have a certain type of setup to enjoy PC to the max. Most gamers are in their 30s, and a lot of them have wives or girlfriends and children. They can’t change their bedroom into some geeky-looking underworld bunker. That won’t fly by a woman! Furthermore, they rather play on their couch, and would sometimes like to get their women and children into the fun (Vice-versa also, as there are as many girl gamers as there are guys).

But even the arguments about two-year old PCs being more powerful than the PlayStation 4 isn’t accurate. In fact, it’s a gross exaggeration. Listen to what an avowed PC fan, who’s built rigs for people, but who also has sense had to say about the whole argument PC gamers have been making concerning the power, or lack thereof of PlayStation 4. It’s the best article I’ve read on the matter by far. Below is an excerpt, but I’d encourage to read the full thing:

Now we hear a lot about how the PS4′s specs don’t match up to current PC’s. That what was demoed doesn’t look as gorgeous as Crysis 3 on max settings. I get that, I can understand where they are coming from, I’ve been gaming on a PC all of my life. I’ve played the Decents, Heretics, Dooms, 7th Guests, Wing Commanders, X-Wing and Tie Fighters (where is a sequel at?), every game LucasArts, Valve, Blizzard, and id Software have put out. I have also done all of these on custom built computers that either myself or my dad has put together. Hell I was taught how to install RAM and remove the BIOS battery before riding a bike. However, in all of this, I think there are some unfair comparisons being made. So far there is not a direct way of purchasing a similarly designed system. There is not an 8 core APU for purchase. Most people are just running a quad core setup. Not to mention the PS4 has a second chip for background processes that helps take even more load off the APU. There is no memory available to purchase that provides the same speed as the PS4. Sure you might have 16 GB of DDR3 for your system and 3 GB of GDDR5 for your video, but it’s not the same as the PS4′s unified 8 GB of GDDR5 clocked at 176 GB/s for system and video. Comparatively non-overclocked DDR3-1333 for PC’s transfer data at 10.7 GB/s. Also, unless you’ve built a completely new computer in the last 6 months, you’re probably not running a complete PCI Express 3.0 Setup. Meaning your MOBO, CPU, and GPU all have to be equipped with it. This means your bus speeds could be aiding in the bottlenecking of your system. Even still PCI 3.0 can’t compete with the bus speeds within an APU. I’m not saying that the PS4 is the end all be all machine, but it might be better equipped than it is given credit for. They also have a clear advantage of being able to write to the metal. There is no cumbersome OS or layers that a typical system has to work through. PC development also has to think about the least common factor when developing a title. It doesn’t make sense for a developer just to build a game for the 10%. Not everyone owns a GTX 680 and even comparably that is a card with 2GB of RAM at $500. That alone will probably be more than the price of Sony’s new console. To build a similar spec’d PC you may need to consider the greater sum of it’s parts than low balling it. I helped a friend build a computer last month and he had a budget of around $1100 (the link for parts can be found here.) and I’ll go out on a limb and say that the PS4 still has a distinct edge.

So even a huge PC fan, one who has actual knowledge of how these things work, has sided with PlayStation 4, reckoning that it has a “distinct edge” on the most up-to-date PC rig out there.

I could go on and on, but This is enough. PC gamers need to just shut up already. Go back to your setup and play your games. Because all this hate is annoying, and shows what you really think about console gamers.

We are all people looking to have fun enjoying our favorite pastime. There’s no need for all the stupid ‘my 2yr old PC is more powerful than your new PS4″ shots, especially when it is a blatant lie.

What moron waits to upgrade their system, based on a game title?

I’m happy for your love of consoles. Go play it and be happy. But don’t talk shit about PC prices when you’re fucking clueless.

“My brother did this, that makes me know everything about everything, ever.”
Goddamnit, I have a roommate like you. I can’t wait till I move out on the 1st. You’re so bullheaded, and you are too narrow minded to listen to what people say. You are so focused on making the console your ‘God’, that you can’t accept reason.

Most of us play on consoles and PC, but some of you act like that is NOT an option. It’s either one or the other. God that’s irritating.

No idiot is going to blindly spend $1,000 all at once on a system, simply because of a new game coming out. Upgrade that, upgrade that, maaaaybe upgrade that, done. Now my system can run as good as your new age console, and it cost me maybe…160$.

So what if my system originally cost around 1300$? Most people buy TVs for that price. Mine came with everything I needed.

Speaking of TVs, since the monitor is considered a part of the computer, you need to add that into your price also. So you’re up to what now, 1400$, if you have a reasonably decent TV?

Oh you don’t have to upgrade your TV when the new console comes out? How can you grasp that concept, but can’t grasp that we don’t have to buy a new computer when a new game comes out?

  • Strudelhouse

    WHAT FREQUENT UPGRADING?

Jesus Christ, this isn’t a PC gamers need to shut up about PS4 article. This is a console vs PC fapathon.

  • Strudelhouse

    My god you’re an idiot.

  • Strudelhouse

Or people should play both console and PC, and stop waging a fapathon holy war over personal preferences passed off as fact.

  • Strudelhouse

Must be nice never making a mistake.

  • Strudelhouse

As much as this is a troll response, it made me laugh. :/

  • Strudelhouse

I agree that pre-builts are more expensive. Gamers who learned that, are the ones who build their own now, hence why there is a market for such a thing. Newegg/TigerDirect are two of the best places I’ve bought parts from. But having a prebuilt is an option available to people who can’t figure out:

Video card goes into video card slot.
    Memory goes into memory slot.
    Motherboard (little more complicated)
    etc.

I understand that some people have issues with putting 2 and 2 together, but seriously, building a computer is about as hard as a complicated Lego set. If that.

And it’s not like you forget how to do it. Do it once, you’re pretty much set for life. Oh, and the manual. Can’t forget that. After you put the square block into the square hole, and the round block into the round hole, you can connect the wires to the motherboard via this lovely thing called a ‘manual’ that shows you exactly where to put each wire.

First time build, maybe took an hour. Second time? 20 minutes, tops.

Simplicity is important to console users, I agree. That’s why people are trying to argue about shit they’re clueless about, to make it look like they’re trying when they aren’t.

    Whatever, I still play both.

  • Strudelhouse

The point, was referring to wireless mice/keyboards. :P

I should have clarified, that was a mistake on my part.

  • Sean Hayden

    No. It’s not.

  • Sean Hayden

I’m just going to respond to your first point because that seems to be the point you seem the most upset about.

Yeah man, I would like to play a game when it comes out, and if the PC I own cannot play it, then I would want to upgrade the PC. As well as every single game that comes out after that that I want to play. Oh, but you can do that on consoles! Great.

  • Sean Hayden

Last year my brother bought a top-of-the-line graphics card that can play BF3 on Ultra. We bought Rome II when it came out and the graphics can be set 4 levels lower than the best because that’s what the graphics card can handle.

So yes, every year you pretty much need to upgrade everything besides RAM.

  • Sean Hayden

Why have both when one obviously triumphs the other?
Consoles are winning bro, PC gaming is dying. Not an ignorant opinion, a well-supported fact.

  • Sean Hayden

Must be nice to time travel.

  • Sean Hayden

It’s not a troll response. It’s me being logical.

  • Viliami Tuanaki

How was it a joke? Xbox has 512 mb of ram and the average of something isn’t over 40%. Is that too hard for you to understand? Oh wait it is? Go back to preschool.

  • Viliami Tuanaki

    Theres your problem Strudelhouse

I didn’t say that most of PC gamers are using an 8 year old computer. Quote from my comment if I have ever said that all you PC gamers are using 8 year old systems. The gaming consoles have to last at least 5 years, this console generation was a lot long than that though, ecspecially the xbox 360 since it was 8 years old and released on 2005 (ps3 and wii released late 2006)
Their 8 years old and guess what? They still play games like crisis on only 512mb of RAM. PS4 and Xbox one will hopefully be better since they have more RAM.

  • Ryumoau

pc gamers are elitist pricks. Always have been, always will be. Console gaming will never die, despite what they think.

  • Raziel2001au

Totally agree with this article, but I’d like to add my 2 cents. Console gamers and PC gamers really are vastly different in what they look for in a gaming system, and I agree that I’m getting pretty sick of having to listen to PC gamers trying to persuade console gamers that they don’t want a console but a PC.

PC gamers want the best graphics, and tend to be people who play a game, finish it and move on to the next. As a result, they care less about restrictive drm that will result in their games not being playable long term. They also like having a machine that they can use for lots of other tasks. PC gamers are also often not big arcade game fans and tend to veer more towards larger games, FPS/mmorpg/strategy games etc. So even the game styles are quite different between the platforms.

In comparison, console gamers tend to care less about having the best graphics and tend to favour convenience and longevity. A no hassle, insert a ps4 game and it will definitely work type of mentality. They also know that the system they bought will be good for 7-10 years, again, not by PC gamer graphical standards, but everything will work, and that’s what they care about.

Furthermore, console gamers value the idea of a game library without usage restrictions, if 30 years from now they decide to go back and play diablo 3, it will still work, can you say the same for the PC version? This is so important to console gamers that Microsoft trying to change this in the xbox one almost resulted in no one wanting to buy one.

Now, onto the games, many of the games console gamers like never see the light of day on the PC platform. For example, the PC happens to be a terrible platform if you like fighting games, most never even get released, and when they do, it is with terribly long delays, I mean, how long did it take for any variation of street fighter iv or the new mortal kombat to release on the PC platform, where’s dead or alive 5, tekken tag tournament 2, soul calibur 5, king of fighters xiii or super street fighter 2 turbo hd remix? It’s for the same reason you don’t see many mmo’s on consoles, different strokes for different folks.

Finally, most console gamers love kicking back and playing games on their tv with a controller. Chances are, if you’re a pc gamer, you’ll be playing on a desk, with a mouse and keyboard. And if you ask a console gamer, they’ll tell you they prefer a controller, just as a PC gamer prefers a keyboard and mouse. Neither are superior, they are just different. With mouse and keyboard, you get aiming precision, but have you considered that your movement has zero variation, you are either walking forward or not. On a gamepad, you can choose exactly how fast and in which direction you want to move with subtle variations, you also don’t have to worry about having to move your mouse around on the pad once you reach the edge. So there are many different sides to that one coin and simply saying one is superior because you believe it to be doesn’t nessasarily make it so. Consider a game like metal gear solid 4, where stealth is important and the exact speed you are moving at could be the difference between life and death, well, let’s just say I’d rather be on a controller than on a keyboard for that game.

In short console gamers and PC gamers are vastly different, and each should stick to the platform that suits them.

  • Greg Smith

Not on xbox. You can only play the demo if you have a silver subscription. Sorry. But anyone can correct me if I’m wrong.

  • Greg Smith

Do you have netflix? It’s called a subscription for a reason. If you stop paying for it, it goes away. I can think of way worse subs than any argument you can make for PS Plus. And you can’t compare console to pc. As pc is in a league of it’s own just keep it between consoles.

  • Greg Smith

So far I have yet to see a pc game look better than killzon sf or the order. Every time I see a vid showing what tesselation looks like turned on for pc, it looks like shit. Sure it might get rid of some jaggies but it looks washed out. No thanks.

  • Greg Smith

    Math doesn’t lie my friend.

  • volkerball85

“What PC games are you going to see take advantage of motion controls and touchpad input like the PS4′s controller? You won’t.”

Because motion controls and touchpads are silly, unnecessary gimmicks? Who cares?

“Using a controller on PC in most cases is a hackjob at best.”

As others have already stated, most games from 2007 onward will automatically map your controller for you. This is even the case with most third-party controllers. I don’t know what games your playing, but for me, when they say “full controller support,” they mean it. The only ones that see me dropping my controller to navigate menus are listed as “partial controller support.”

  • volkerball85

    “PC gaming is dying.”

Outlets like Steam are raking in tons of cash every year, GPU sales keep climbing and climbing. Meanwhile, console sales have been dropping steadily since the PS2 generation. But sure, PC gaming is “dying.”

  • volkerball85

Yeah, actually, it is. I used to think like you and countless others; that upgrading or building a PC was this Herculean task that required a degree in computer science or something. The biggest tool you need is a screwdriver. After that, it’s all about locking and attaching one piece to the next. You wouldn’t believe how simple it is. (Err… well, I guess you don’t.)

  • Sean Hayden

It is a Herculean task compared to plugging in the PS4 and downloading a single update.

What do you need for the PC? An instruction manual, a screwdriver, a case to fit it all in.

  • Sean Hayden

PC sales are dropping faster than consoles sales tho.

  • volkerball85

Yes, just like putting together a home-cooked meal is a Herculean task if you compare it to picking up the phone and ordering a pizza. The fact that one task is brain-dead simple does not automatically make anything else “difficult.” Not as simple =/= impossible.

  • volkerball85

PC sales figures are not PC gaming figures. Notebooks, Netbooks and low-end PC sales are indeed dropping, because tablets fill the roles of all three rather nicely. On top of this, high-end PC sales aren’t really wowing anyone because we’ve moved beyond the days where a computer had to be replaced every few years. People who bought a decent computer a few years ago still have a decent comp, so why buy a new one?

But the thing is, graphics card sales have been rising, and continue to rise steadily as time goes on. PC game sales continue to rake in cash, even as digital sales are still considered to not count, compared to physical/retail sales.

I personally don’t give a flying crap what platform people choose. Like Playstation? Awesome, have fun. Xbox? Same thing. PC? Great. I just get tired of the pissing contest, and the need to tear down other platforms and the people that use them. PC’s not going anywhere, consoles aren’t going anywhere, play what you enjoy, the end.

  • garga

OK, most console gamers love kicking back and playing games on their tv with a controller. And you’re totaly sure a controller can’t be pluged in into PC. So how do you think me and my buddys play FIFA an PC in front of a TV? Exactly, wiht 2 ore more plugged in controlers. You know I don’t wanna be an Elitist, and don’t want to be rude. The problem that bothers me is that most people whon don’t play on PC don’t know about PC gaming. I played Tombraider and Assasins Creed on PC with my controler. The only difference to the console concerning these games is the graphics which tend to be better on PC sometimes. But good graphics don’t make a good game. So as long as you’ve fun, play the way you like. I’m not defending the elitists, i do not critisize the console gamers. I just want to correct the myths of PC gaming. And one of them is that PC players always use mouse and keyboard. Infact many games I play, are better played with a plugged in controler. And by the way I had my first PC Gamepad way back in the 1990′s when the first Fifa came out. And all my friends that I know who play PC games have a controler. Ever tried to play a racing game with a keyboard? That sucks, no force feedback, no rumbling and no precission. The good thing is I can plug in a steering wheel or a gamepad. As I said, I just want to correct the false view most people have on PC gaming.

  • Sean Hayden

I never said impossible. Now you’re putting words into my mouth and you’re looking like an idiot. I’m done arguing with you.

I don’t want to learn how to put together a PC JUST for graphics. I could not give two shits about how the game looks. I just want the quality of gameplay and story and the diversity of the game to be as great as the PC games out there. Which there aren’t many of! I mean look at Diablo 3. What story? It has less story than Dark Souls! Which was a console exclusive until you guys made a petition. And Demon’s Souls is still exclusive to PS3.

  • Sean Hayden

PC gaming sales are dying due to tablets as well as consoles becoming better and better.

Can you tell your PC what to do? No, you can’t. You have to do everything yourself.

  • volkerball85

I already told you; PC gaming is not dying. GPU sales would not be soaring higher and higher every damned year if this were the case. You can refute this all you like, but the sales figures speak a lot louder. For that matter, tablets don’t really have much bearing on PC gaming. They affect the sales of portable and low-end PCs -only-, because that’s the class of computer they’re effectively replacing. Bottom line.

“Can you tell your PC what to do? No, you can’t. You have to do everything yourself.”

The hell are you talking about? Theoretically, I can do anything I want with my PC. All it takes is knowledge and resources. I can modify the hardware and software. I can code my own games and programs. I can even use a program that lets me play PC games dating all the way back to the 1980s. Meanwhile, the Xbox One and Playstation 4 lack backwards compatibility for games released just a few months ago on their predecessors. On top of this, if you want to modify, hack or do much of anything on these consoles other than simply play games, you’re shit out of luck. Sony and Microsoft will take you to court if you try. Your inevitable retort to this will probably be “WELL, -I- DON’T CARE ABOUT THOSE THINGS!” but you’re the one who raised this point in the first place, incoherent as it was.

By its very nature, the PC is the single most versatile platform in existence today. This is not an opinion.

  • volkerball85

“Now you’re putting words into my mouth”

You’re acting like it’s impossible. It’s not. It’s like I already said, I used to look at all of this crap the exact same way. Fast-forward two years, and it’s astounding how simple all of it really is.

“I don’t want to learn how to put together a PC JUST for graphics.”

Dude, nobody’s forcing you to. All we’ve done is point out the fact that none of this is as difficult as you’re acting like it is, and you’re reacting as if we’re trying to convert you. I don’t care what platform you prefer, I just don’t like it when people make shit up about the platform I happen to prefer. People like you are every bit as aggravating as the so-called “PC Elitists” which the author of this article wishes would “shut up,” yet I don’t see anyone writing articles about you.

    “I’m done arguing with you.”

Whatever you say, man. This little debate is about as productive as headbutting a brick wall as it is.

  • Sean Hayden

I told you what I care about, and the PS4 adheres to those things as well as, if not better, than a PC does.

PCs have too many replacements nowadays to be called versatile. Your argument is invalid.

  • volkerball85

“I told you what I care about,”

Then why bring up the point at all? You claim that PCs aren’t versatile, I illustrate the ways in which they are, and your response is that you don’t care about any of those things. “Can you tell your PC what to do?” Yes I can. It does whatever I want to do.

“PCs have too many replacements nowadays to be called versatile.”

Your logic makes no sense. This is like saying that because sports cars require occasional maintenance or new parts, go-karts are therefore a superior method of transportation. You’ve made it clear that you’re the type who thinks we need to rush out and spend $1000 for some new component or another every time a new game comes out. My graphics card is almost 3 years old, I spent $89 on it, and it plays every game I have on High-Ultra. I’m not replacing anything.

All of this aside, it’s not wise to try to make arguments of versatility, because as a console player, the facts are not going to come down in your favor. This isn’t a dig; it’s a simple fact that consoles are made to do a small number of very specific things. Play games, play music, watch movies/netflix. PCs are designed to do all of this and far more. You talk about consoles getting “better,” but how did they achieve this? By becoming more like PCs. By adding graphics hardware closer to what PCs use, by adding internal hard drives and disk drives, by adding internet capability/online play, wifi, USB ports, the list goes on and on. They use the same class of components as a PC, they simply run their own Operating Systems and are manufactured by companies who will sue you if you try to change anything inside them. Yep, that’s some awesome versatility.

Once again, call me when your Playstation or Xbox lets you create your own games and programs and has backwards compatibility reaching back to the 1980s. Until then, I think we’re done here.

  • james

So even a huge PC fan, one who has actual knowledge of how these things work, has sided with PlayStation 4, reckoning that it has a “distinct edge” on the most up-to-date PC rig out there.

If he would have knowledge on how these things work he would have known that there are apus aout there with 8 Cores, each of them not crappy 1,2 ghz like the Ps4, each of them 4 ghz.

    Greetings James

  • Sean Hayden

They aren’t versatile BECAUSE they have so many replacements.

That’s the issue here. Everything that replaces it is FAR cheaper, and everything that replaces it, replaces it in every way.

  • Sean Hayden

    To your all caps sentence:

Yeah true, but it takes days to set that sort of thing up if you know nothing about it.

PS4 automatically detects your TV and just sets itself to those resolutions. It also takes two plugins, the power cord, and the HDMI cord. Nothing else is needed to plug in to the PS4.

Did I mention the mic is the controller and you can talk to your PS4 and tell it what to do?

  • Sean Hayden

    I’m assuming you use batteries?

  • Sean Hayden

What you don’t realize about the PS4 is that it will last almost a decade before a new console is needed.

You have about a year with your PC before an upgrade is needed at the rate these games are increasing in quality and size.

  • Sean Hayden

Ps Plus is $50 a year and this month alone we received $151 dollars of free games. Welp, only 11 months to go.

  • Sean Hayden

$50 a year hat will not be missed when you receive $151 in one month *cough* two ps4 games, 3 ps3 games, and two vita games *cough*. 11 months to go of free games every tuesday? So what if I have to pay another $50 a year from now? I get all of the games I earned this year AND the next year. Did I mention the ungodly 75% off discounts every week?

  • Sean Hayden

If you can’t pay $50 a year then you shouldn’t even be gaming.

  • volkerball85

“They aren’t versatile BECAUSE they have so many replacements.”

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. You might as well be arguing against the sun rising every day. The PC platform is the epitome of versatility, because despite the bug you have up your ass about the concept of upgrading, it allows you to do pretty much anything you can think of. This is why games are coded on PC, not tablets or consoles. This is why the Indie Games market thrives on PC, but is restricted on consoles. The list goes on. PC is an open and free platform where nobody can put a leash on what you want to do, while consoles are closed systems, completely controlled by the companies that make them. Non-upgradable, non-customizable. You can literally do nothing outside of the narrow list of tasks the console manufacturers have pre-approved for you; games, music, movies. And once again, if you try, they will take you to court. Yep, that’s some awesome versatility. That’s the future; corporate control of everything. No innovation. No independent development. Yessir.

“As I stated, why have backwards compatibility when my PS3, Vita, and PS4 all cost less than a PC? PLUS, there is the handheld!”

You tell me, because I constantly see console players demanding backwards compatibility, then griping when they don’t get it. The reason for this being that every new console that comes out completely changes up what it uses, in terms of processor architecture, operating system and everything else. It’s pretty much impossible to maintain backwards compatibility unless you do what the early models of the PS3 did, and include an entire PS2 inside the unit. But then that drives up costs. The alternative is software emulation, which is what they did on the Xbox 360, but that’s spotty at best.

My PC cost me $339. I then spent a little bit more to upgrade it to roughly the level of a $650-$700 model, without spending anywhere near that much. So no, I haven’t spent thousands of dollars. If I’d “DUMPED” money over the years into every new console that came out, however, it would’ve certainly cost thousands. This is especially true of the last gen. How many people had to replace their 360 after it RROD’d on them? How many times? As it is, I own an NES, SNES, Genesis/Megadrive, PS1, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox. All together, they probably cost me close to $2000, not counting replacements for faulty units, and yet all of them are pretty much useless now. They still can only do what they were designed to do; play games made for them and then become obsolete. Meanwhile, my PC is going to keep chugging along for years to come. The key is that concept you hate; upgrading. I don’t have to throw my PC out every few years and spend half a grand to replace it with something else that will then itself have to be replaced by something even newer 5-6 years later.

But the funny thing is, I used to be a console player anyway. I used to make the same arguments you do here, I used to hate the idea of PC gaming, and of upgrading. But sometime into the PS3/Xbox 360 generation, I got sick of it. I’d just barely get a new system, and the next gen would come out. I didn’t feel like spending that kind of money for something that would be useless within 5 years. Meanwhile, for all your irrational hatred of the idea, I can simply upgrade my PC to stay current, and no, it doesn’t cost $1000 every single time. We’re talking $120 at the very most.

“When I talk about a cheap PC that is as strong as the PS4, I don’t mean at the current time. I mean for the next 8 years, what PC can you build/buy today for $300 that will last you 8 years and allow you to play top-of-the-line games for 8 years? None.”

You’re thinking in terms of consumer level costs. You do realize that the PS and Xbox aren’t -really- that cheap, right? They cost closer to what a gaming rig costs to put together, and they simply sell it at a loss to consumers, then do their best to make up the money through game sales. If they were forced to actually construct consoles at a cost of only $300 or less, you’d all still be playing consoles on par with the first Xbox right now. I guarantee you that I could take that full $700 or more manufacturing price and put together a PC that would make the PS4 look like a joke.

“There is not a single PC you can build today that is $1000 that won’t need an upgrade within the next 8 years to play top-of-the-line games.”

Except that your console will stop being “top-of-the-line” within just one year. By the end of its life cycle, its graphical capabilities will be laughable. This is why consoles are replaced in the first place. If a PC needs a graphics hardware update, it’s because graphics tech on PC keeps marching forward, while consoles stagnate until the next generation comes out. I can guarantee you that if I had $1000 to play with, creating a system to last that long would be a breeze. And then, even if it does need an upgrade, we’re talking about $80-$120 at the very most. It just amuses me that you’re so disgusted by the idea of having to spend a few bucks to replace one part inside a PC… yet having to drop half a grand every 5-8 years on an entirely new console isn’t a problem? Alrighty then.

Honestly, in a lot of ways, I get where you’re coming from on this issue, even if I don’t get the huge chip on your shoulder. Like I said, I used to be in the same camp as you. My preferences simply changed. I’m not going to sit here and try to convert you or to convince you that PCs are God… they’re simply not what you seem to think they are.

It’s like I’ve already said, several times, if you prefer consoles, that’s cool. I’d just prefer if you and others on your side didn’t make shit up about a platform you really don’t seem to understand. It’s even worse when you try to argue these points with someone who does. Would you argue with a mechanic about how cars work?

Whatever the case, I think we’re done. We’re not accomplishing anything here, and we’re certainly not changing any minds. You can continue replying if you like, but I’ve said what I came here to say(several times, in fact), and I don’t know what more I can tell you. Take care.

I never argued the value of it. I do spend $50 a year and I get more in return for my PS3, Vita, and now PS4. I just wish they would come out with a multiple year discount.

I know you can connect a controller and game on the PC since I do it myself. I never said you couldn’t. But PC gamers usually make a big deal out of mouse and keyboard controls and I think it’s overrated…

I was just pointing out the mentalities of the two sets of gamers are vastly different. And many of the positive points raised by PC gamers aren’t as important to console gamers, and PC gaming has it’s own list of downsides.

I don’t mind either platform, but when I’m exhausted after a day of work, my console is usually my first stop. I game on PCs when I don’t mind sitting in front of the PC for a few additional hours, or when I want to play strategy games since those don’t really work well on consoles.

Anyway, ignoring the fact that you think I don’t know about PC gaming despite being a game developer, I agree on all your other points.

to be honest i love the freedom of my pc but i often find myself setting up my pc to use a ps3 controller i am in the middle.
When it comes to ps3 or xbox there is no need for this. but again i do believe the pc can get better graphics. the creators of starwars unleashed 2 said that ps3 and xbox do not even come close to handleing the graphics that they made for the pc this is just an example and dont get me started on the differance of skyrim on console vs pc

dude, my pc is about 4 years old, and i only spent a max of AUD$600 on it (local store was having a moving sale), and i haven’t purchased 1 upgrade as of yet (My Brother’s Borther in-law gave me for x-mas last year a really sweet PSU which i installed myself thats the only thing upgraded on it) and as for the only things that will need upgrading, is my 1TB HDD(old Sata2 i got for $50 that was in my old computer before this one), and my CPU (an Ancient AMD PhenomII X2 560 [OC'd from 3.3GHZ to 3.8GHz on stock air cooler]). with that even going to ebay all i will need is HDD AUD$95 for a 2 tb (and the beauty is i can still use my old HDD as extra Storage) and the cp i want (FX-8350) is AUD$269.95, but if i wanted to save some cash (cause lets face it no game out there uses all these cores i could go for a 6 series. so in other words i call BS on your 1 year upgrades, and also BS on your ps4 lasting 10 years!. as a note: PS4 isn’t true 1080p its upscaled 720p
