With the newly releases super slim PS3, Sony’s hoping to lure away Xbox 360 owners who, it says, are looking to own a second console for unspecified reaons.
Those were the words of Sony’s hardware marketing man John Koller, speaking in a long-ranging interview with Gamespot, adding that bundled with their 2011 flagship game Uncharted 3, the value becomes even more compelling. He also said that those picking up the new model were “most likely… not a PS3 owner yet”.
He continued:
We have seen a very high interest rate from Xbox 360 consumers wanting to purchase a second console. We’ve held up Uncharted 3 as our flagship product over the last year and it’s a good opportunity for those types of consumers to come over and own a second console in their household.
The new model is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current PS3 (itself a redesign from the original version), and will come in three editions: 250GB, 500GB and an HDD-less 12GB version. The new PS3 will also be available in two colors: White and Black.
Koller reckons that interest in the newly redesigned console is like the original Xbox during the previous generation.
We saw the same kind of thing happen in reverse during the PS2 years when a lot of PS2 consumers said they wanted to get an Xbox because of Halo and some other games. So we think the strategy works and it’s a good one.
He went on to confirm that Sony will be supporting PS3 or “the next few years”, and promised a robust software lineup.
