Levine – “I Thought [Bioshock] Was Too Weird”

Before Bioshock came to PC and consoles, there was a lot going on behind the scenes. In fact, according to creator Ken Levine, the game stood the chance of not ever being published. But let’s get past all that because Bioshock’s turned into one of the most successfully franchises for Take-Two, and is now 2K Games bestselling title to date.

Levine, however, never thought it’d do so well as, according to him, the concept was just too weird.

When asked by EGM if he was expecting the game to sell so exceptionally well, Levine responded:

“No. I had this thing where my goal was I would sell a million units,” he said. “My co-founder Jon Chey and I would talk about it and he was like, “Nah, I don’t know, we never sell anything like that,” and I was like, “I don’t know, I really hope we can do that this time, and I dreamed, I used to have dreams about selling a million units.

I never expected to sell four-and-a-half million units, I just thought it was too weird. You know, it’s a first person shooter in a failed objectivist Utopia. That’s weird,” he added.

Ken Levine and his Irrational Games’ team are now hard at work on Bioshock Infinite, a game he says is “scary as hell” to develop.

    I still haven’t played any bioshock games. Infinite intrigues me though. I might get that one.

    have to play the original, has one of the best stories ever seen in a game!
    has a few really cool twists too.
    the original had the better story, but the sequel had the better gameplay.
    difference is what sells games!
    if you keep releasing the same crap over and over again people are going to get bored!
    that helped allot in the games sales, but what made it sell so well was its story, and just the world of rapture.
    the art style is so well done, and theres a real historic sense to the place.
    not so much as ME2, where it feels like real life, but close.
    they did a really good job creating rapture, and giving it history making it feel like once apon a time people lived here, worked here, born here, died here.
    just the world rapture itself is what made the game so magnificent, and is why im so sad to see it go!
    infinite looks cool, but the world does not have the same sense of drama and art style that rapture does.

    Original had me spooked to the core. Still remember the darn thing like a nightmare.
