NPD May 2012 Results – Diablo III Bests Multi-plats, 3DS Wins Hardware Race

In May 2012, the games industry saw yet another year-on-year decline, falling 28% from $718.9 million in May 2011 to $516.5 million in May 2012. Blizzard’s Diablo III managed to beat out all multiplatform games, while Nintendo’s 3DS topped the hardware charts.

While the figures are definitely not encouraging, the NPD’s Anita Frazier placed a positive spin on the situation, especially when non-traditional transactions were thrown in the mix.

“These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories which account for roughly 50-60% of the total consumer spend on games. When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales such as used and rentals at $155MM, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $420MM, we would estimate the total consumer spend in May to be $1.17B,” she said.

Nintendo 3DS sold the most units during the month of May, managing a year-on-year increase of 17 percent. Overall, though, hardware saw a deep of 39 percent compared to the same period last year.

On the software front, there was a drop of 16 percent compared to last year, an occurrence the NPD attributes to fewer releases (27 percent less compared to last year).

Diablo III, a PC exclusive, sold more units than multiplatform releases like Max Payne 3 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. It was the first time since 2010 a PC exclusive topped the U.S. software charts, when another Blizzard game, StarCraft managed number 1, “a testament to the power of the Blizzard brand in PC gaming,” said the NPD’s Anita Frazier.

Top Ten Selling Games In May 2012:

interesting that MP3 has so far only sold 20% of what LA Noire did at the same time frame!
surprised actually, LA Noire did well but i did not think it did that well!
not really a surprise that this year is down on last years though, may last year had so many awesome games releasing!
this year had fewer and to be honest the 3 big ones turned out to be massive disappointments!
TBH this year is turning out to be year of the disappointments!
