Shigeru Miyamoto Isn’t Retiring From Nintendo, But He’s Taking A “Lesser” Position

Shocking news broke last night coming from Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, who told Wired’s GameLife blog that he was “retiring” from Nintendo as a game designer to go back to doing smaller projects. Nintendo quickly struck back at the news, however, bluntly stating none of it is true.

But Miyamoto himself told the site: “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position…. What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

So there’s some truth to his statement, but not as many have made it out to be – he’s staying with Nintendo. Miyamoto is one of the greatest developers the gaming industry has ever seen, creating mainstays such as Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong.
