Alan Wake Was Planned For PS3, Xbox 360 And PC

by Ernice Gilbert on March 25th, 2011, under Development, Hot, News, PS3

According to Remedy CTO Markus Maki, the move to sign an exclusivity deal with Microsoft to make Alan Wake an Xbox 360-only game, was a “business risk” that took the “big technological effort, the PS3, out of the equation.”

Maki told CVG that although they risked reaching leas of the gaming market by making Alan Wake a 360 exclusive, Microsoft’s offer was too good to pass up.

“Our strategy was one of focus,” Maki said. “That’s actually a really core Remedy element, well if you forget the ambitious goals we had. We needed to be top notch in some areas, but we knew we couldn’t do everything better than some developers out there. For example, this meant there was no multiplayer. That wasn’t in our core set of skills and it would have been a huge effort.

We also took the approach to license middleware that made sense, even when we didn’t end up using it all for one reason or another. And then, the big deal – to go with Microsoft and take one big technological effort, the PS3, out of the equation. That then changed the technology risk to a business risk – but that’s a subject for a different talk altogether…”

Maki also made mention of Unreal Engine 3, saying they’d once thought of ditching the engine they created for Epic’s.

“We looked at Unreal and other technologies out there, but this was actually before the PS3 and Xbox 360 were ever even released,” he said. “We also had all three platforms planned in the beginning – PC, 360 and PS3. I think it’s safe to say now overly optimistic view of the schedule. At that point, we didn’t dare commit to shipping a game on third-party tech until the developers of that tech had shipped a game on each of those platforms.

Five years later, [I'll admit] that the reasoning wasn’t solid because these guys beat us to the punch easily.”

Yet, Maki’s pleased with their engine’s prowess.

    big mistake!
would of been allot harder, but they would of made allot more money out of it.
i just hope it does not hurt the chances of a sequel, i mean if theres one game out there that deserves a sequel its this!
one of the best thought out stories ever in a product!
not just games, but books, movies, comics, everything!
they just need to inject some more history into the game.
only reason why ME2s story is so highly regarded is not because of its plot, saving the world from alins quite overdone and cliche, but is because of its background!
theres so much history there, you really do feel like you could go into space and run into shepard and his shenanigans!
no game has ever done that!
    make the story feel real!

Really bad move to keep AW away from PS3 and PC…..but then you never know how much MS offered them.

truthfully this game would have been more appreciated if it was a ps3 exclusive

you gotta understand remedy are still a small studio.
they had allot of technical barriers to overcome with alan wake as it was.
a whole new rendering engine, a whole new animation system, a whole new graphics engine, a whole new physics engine, a whole new lighting engine.
everything you see in AW is built by them!
they did not have the time nor money nor manpower to take on a new system.
there not in the position to spend the money and time and manpower to learn a whole new architecture.
thats why allot of developers hate the ps3 and tis why we get so many shoddy ports.
they just dont have the resources to re teach there staff.
especially when that time could be spent making a new game!
i hope alan wake 2 is 360 and PC, and hopefully they get endless funds and support from M$!
there such a talented studio, its a shame there so small and really dont have the resources to be something bigger.

i hope they dont do AW2 for ps3 because they wont be able to release the original on ps3.
AWs one of those games that you have to play the original to be able to understand the story properly.
kicking myself for playing ME2 before the original!

Ah – they could do some backstory….looking forward to it.

yeah this would’ve sold better as a PS3 exclusive or even a multiplat. look how well Heavy Rain did. these genres are more appreciated on PS3. 360 owners mainly buy shooters.

You’re talking the truth, ExclusivesMostly – so hopefully Remedy will look at Heavy Rain’s success and release the game for all formats.

Even better if they include MOVE support. It would be so cool to use the move controller as the flashlight.

Never even thought of that. That’s an excellent idea, bro. Ha.
