The Four Most Awesome Games With The Worst Endings This Generation

There’s nothing worst than playing an exciting game that ends weak. I often wonder why in the world would a developer work so hard to make its title so exciting throughout most of the game and suddenly, at the end, drop the ball.

And it’s some of the most awesome titles ever forged. You’d think said developers would have spend some time polishing what’s supposed to be the “grand finale”.

It beats me, but probably next time around, the developers responsible for the franchises that I’m about to list will do their game endings with a bang, next time. I’m not talking about big explosions and what not, all the special effects can be included of course, but make it work. Stop leaving people on cliffhangers and leaving questions unanswered.

Here are five of the most awesome games with the worst endings:

Killzone 2:

Although many shooters came out after Killzone 2, some over a year later, I still would contend that Killzone 2 is the best shooter on the market. Guerrilla Games did a great job at creating an experience that’s second to none in the FPS Genre.

From the game’s weighty feel, to the intense atmosphere throughout your campaign, to some of the best graphics rendered on any gaming console.

Yet, I find the game’s ending to be rather poorly executed. The lead up was great, but the climax was confusing. You fought against Radec at the end, who, for some reason, had unknown disappearing abilities. When you’ve completed the task of defeating the boss, he kills himself. Straightway the game breaks into a cutscene and to make a long story short, one of your team members shoots Scolar Visari dead.

Of course, later, Rico ventures outside only to find more Helghast ships emerging. And then the game ends. It’s obvious that the war continues, and Killzone 3 will start exactly where its predecessor ended. But Guerrilla Games could have done a better job in explaining some of the loose ends. Hopefully, Killzone 3′s ending will work.

God of War III:

There are good games, and then there are great games. God of War III is a great game. And that’s in every sense of the word. Never before have I experienced a title so epic, so grand, and it looks so natural in God of War III.

Some of the best boss battles are to be had there. So what happened in the end?

With a game with such a dramatic build up from the beginning, how it ended would leave even the most avid fans dissatisfied. Santa Monica said this was the final in the Greek Mythology stories for Kratos, yet many questions were left unanswered.

Also, why did Kratos killed himself, and at the end there’s a blood trail suggesting he might still be alive?

That game’s ending could have been executed much better. God of War 4 maybe?

Alan Wake:

Here’s a great game executed really well throughout, with some of the most beautiful visuals, but in the end, closed the book with serious holes needing to be blocked.

Alan Wake tells the tale of a writer who’s basically living the dramatic life of a fictional character from a novel, he himself wrote.

Throughout the game, there are certain things unfolding that, I thought, would be answered at the end. However when title comes to a climax, you’d think some answers would surface. Nothing.

You’re left thinking, ‘what the hec was this all about‘?

Surely, after five years, Remedy could have performed a better ending for Alan Wake.

Resistance 2:

Resistance 2 wasn’t a bad game. It wasn’t great either. The game got stuck somewhere in between and up to this day fans are complaining. Hopefully, Resistance 3 will get everything right.

But back on topic, the end of Resistance 2 did no impress at all. In fact, it’s one of the worst endings of this generation.

Hale made his own way to stop Daedalus (the game’s final boss), from disposing a bomb they’d hope to deliver to the Chimeran ship’s reactor core to destroy it and kill him. Hale achieved his task, though upon touching it’s corpse, He was overwhelmed by strong psychokinetic abilities, and thus inherited all of Daedalus’ powers. Within four minutes after activating the bomb, Hale used his new-found powers: psychokinesis, super-speed and enhanced reflexes to reach Capelli and escape with him in a shuttle. The resulting explosion succeeded in completely destroying the fleet as Hale and Capelli barely avoid the nuclear blast, but only to have their ship malfunction from the explosion’s electromagnetic pulse field, forcing them to crash land.
Hale fully Chimeran at the end of Resistance 2.

Capelli regained consciousness and found Hale was no longer in the craft, and emerged from the shuttle and found him staring up at the sky; which has turned red with three planet-like spheres. Hale then turned to face Capelli – revealing he had finally been overcame by the virus. Hale, his voice consumed with an un-natural radiance, quoted the same words Daedalus spoke to him during their first encounter: “Can you hear them. They are calling to us. It’s beautiful.” Capelli immediately pulled out his pistol, and telling Hale to stay back from approaching him. Hale finished his statement to Capelli, stating “this is just the beginning.” Contrary to his earlier hostility, Capelli solemnly apologized, saying “Forgive me, sir. It was an honor” and very reluctantly, executed Hale with a gunshot to the head.

Insomniac can do way better than that. The studio recently announced that soon it’ll be unveiling the new PS3 exclusive title its been working on. Most signs point to Resistance 3. Here’s to hoping all goes well.

R2 and alan wake were not bad endings, there just poorly chosen.
there trying to end on a cliffhanger when they should of really just closed the story out and leave that for the sequels to deal with!
sorta the same thing with GOW3, stig said at least 500 thousand times that GOW3 was the last of this story arc, so why did they end on a cliff hanger?
yeah, im going to end this series with the main character dying than hint that maybe hes not dead!
its like finishing star wars on episode 4 and leaving out the other 2!
    honestly!
if your going to end a series you need to close all doors, answer all questions and leave the players with a felling of completion make them feel like the series has served its purpose and its finished.
not leave the characters limbering in the middle of nothing wondering if their hero there savior there god is still alive!
GOW3 has to have the WORST! ending in a video game ever in the history of video games!
no matter how long video games co exist, there could be 100 billion games to release after GOW3, it would be physically impossible to create a worse ending than GOW3!
probably should not say that because developers would take that as a challenge, but still.

Yeah GOW 3′s ending had me pissed for a week. I mean it was so unexpected given that it should’ve been closure to the trilogy. I guess that’s what the devs wanted: to surprise! Resistance 2? Well I thought that was ok, kinda funny actually. As for killzone 2, yeah the ending was not the best but it made me want more. Can’t wait for Killzone 3!

Yep, looking forward to KZ3 bigtime.

As for Resistance 2, well, it could have been much better imo!

both KZ and R need to fix up their stories, there so basic and there just for the sake of it there not really in depth interesting stories.
both need to go back to the origins, show us how the hig race started off, show us why the ISA are at war with them.
same with resistance, take us back to the origins, show us how the chimera came to be, how they developed the tech they did, and why there attacking earth.
id love to see resistance 3 take place on the chimera home planet, and maybe even in space!
i remember hearing rumors that R3 was going to take place on the chimeran home planet, and there will actually be 2 long SP campaigns one on the human side and one for the chimera side.
hope thats true, if so, i can see a humans are the bad guys twist half way through the game.
like haze, the first half your trained to hate skineater, hes the bad guy, the new hitler.
than half way through the game you wake up to the truth and realize its mantel who are the bad guys.
i can see R3 doing the exact thing, after all this time of fighting the chimera i can see R3 ending with your main character finding out the chimera are not the bad guys.
both games need to go back to the origins though, and have a deep indepth story.
a story like assassins creed or metal gear solid, who said shooters have to have paper thin mundane boring stories?
