Rumor Thirst: Rockstar’s San Diego Studio In Trouble For ‘Degrading’ Work Conditions

by Colton West on January 9th, 2010, under Articles, Rumor

An anonymous letter posted on a Gamasutra members blog under the name “Rockstar Spouse” although the contents of the letter claim it represents a collection of spouses standing up against what they claim to be “degrading” working conditions at Rockstar’s San Diego studio.

“Till present, the working conditions persist to deteriorate as employees are manipulated by certain hands that wield the reigns of power in Rockstar San Diego,” the blog post alleges. “Furthermore, the extent of degradation employees have suffered extends to their quality of life and their family members.”

Other examples of “degradation” claimed in the post are mandatory 12-hour work days, six days a week, and deliberate lies about deadlines. “The managers at Rockstar San Diego continue in their dishonesty, pushing their employees to the brink promising temporariness fully equipped with the knowledge of another deadline just around the corner,” the post reads. “The reigns whip again, and it becomes mandatory to work close to twelve hours a day including Saturdays, regardless if an employee has finished all his duties prior.”

The letter claims such conditions have even caused “some employees [to] have been diagnosed with depression symptoms and at least one among them is acknowledged to have suicidal tendencies.” The letter concludes with a stating that “if these working conditions stay unchanged in the upcoming weeks, preparation will be made to take legal action against Rockstar San Diego.”

Looks like Rockstar might be in trouble once again but as of now this should be taken with a grain of salt. Nothing has been confirmed and Rockstar has not issued any response to the allegations at this time.

I always say where there’s smoke then there’s fire. Might not be as severe a fire but something has been kindled; let’s hope they can work things out before this gets out of hand.

*Hopes my wife doesn’t see this stuff!

I just started back school, and what is my major? Simulation & Game Development! LOL, I’ve already been warning her, that there have been MAJOR layoffs this year, and this isn’t the type of stuff she would want to read at this point.

If it’s true(which I don’t doubt these days), I really hope some people are fired.
Lazy people get good jobs all the time, while good people get lousy jobs all the time.
