The PlayStation 3 is a powerful piece of hardware, there’s no going around the fact but after Amy Hennig said last year that they’d “maxed out” the console, gamers began pondering whether there’d be another PS3 game that would surpass the standard set by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Apart from Santa Monica’s claim that God of War III could only be realized on PS3, Evan Wells, Co-President of Naughty Dog had even more to say about the console’s raw power.
“It really feels that sometimes it’s [PS3] this bottomless pit of processing power, you find the right kind of job for it and it can just churn through those things so fast, which really helps with a lot of our rendering and post processing effects,” Wells told G4TV.
About the comment made by Amy Hennig last year: “we have said before we are using about a third of the PS3 and I think this time that we have maxed it out – last time was 30 percent – it feels almost like a hardware jump from one game to the next,” he said, “the first game, it [PS3] was idle about 70 percent of the time, which we rectified for the sequel, and now it’s at least busy 100 percent of the time, but it’s still not fully optimized code. I mean, in order to get to that 100 percent, it was more about making sure the pipeline was filled, and we weren’t running into one of the processors becoming idle because there wasn’t a job for it.
“But now we have to go into all of those routines and optimize them so that we can get even more done using the cell processor.”
Uncharted 2 was released last October to critical praise and since then has received countless Game of The Year honors from big and small gaming publications alike. No word yet on when Uncharted 3 will make its way to PS3, but fans can rest assured it will come.
