While Mass Effect 3 topped the software charts in March, the NPD notes it was overall a disappointing showing as the industry saw a 25 percent decline in sales overall compared to the same time last year. Details and top 10 games are below.
“While it was a disappointing month, and first quarter, for new physical retail sales of video games hardware, software and accessories, it wasn’t entirely unexpected given guidance we’ve seen from several sources,” said the NPD’s Anita Frazier.
“Outside of new physical retail sales, we find that the consumer spend on content on used games, rentals, subscriptions, mobile games, social network games, digital full game downloads and add-on content accounted for an additional $2.5 billion to $2.7 billion across the U.S., U.K., France & Germany in Q1 2012.”

not exactly surprising.
this year has been really depressing for games!
normally by this time of the year we have HEAPS of GOTY contenders already!
last year by now we had portal 2, dead space 2, crysis 2, killzone 3, socom 4, we had heaps of kick a$$ games!
this year though only big release we have had so far is ME3, and thats, well, lets just leave it at it wont be getting any GOTY awards!
rest of the year is not looking much better either.
weve only got MP3, diablo 3, darksiders 2, AC3 and halo 4.
heaps of games releasing but not really many OMFG AAA big releases were accustomed to.
no where near the amount of games were use to staring down the barrel of jumping in excitement!
this makes me believe even more so that were heading into a new generation.
why else is it so quiet compare to the past few years?
this years gotta be the most disappointing year for games since the ps3 released back in 06 and had nothing to offer!
i really hope the exclusive $ony has been teasing releases this year!
otherwise this is going to be the first year since again 06 where the 360 has more exclusives releasing then the ps3!

starhawk looks pretty meh and its campaign is only 4 hours long they were saying on the blog.
only ps3 exclusive im slightly interested in this year is sly 4, and im a bit iffy on that did not really enjoy the HD colection that much.
only ps3 exclusive im really excited for is the last of us, but i doubt that will be out this year every retailer here has a date of 2013.
