A band of developers have claim they’ve managed to enable a feature that Sony once boasted as PS3-only, on Xbox 360, and that there version is superior to Sony’s technique.
The feature is called MLAA anti-aliasing, and has been seen performing on PS3 stunners like Killzone 3 and God of War III.
Sony created the effect to eliminate “jaggies” in PS3 titles, a technique first utilized on God of War III, resulting in far better MLAA technique found on any other platform.
The feature’s been used many times since then, even from Sony’s third-party partners. Never once was the tech utilized on Xbox 360 because nobody thought it could be done…..All that’s changed now.
A group of developers now claim to have the feature running not only on Xbox 360, but on PSC also, claiming it’s even better than the smarts utilized on PS3.
MLAA is demands a lot, taking 3-4ms to render on PS3, but Jorge Jimenez and Jose I. Echevarria say their 360 version quicker: “On the Xbox 360 we run at 2.47ms, with still a lot of optimisations to try,” Jimenez told GI.
“We can’t speak for all the MLAA(-like) implementations out there, but we think our current version 1.6 (the one used for these comparisons) has raised the quality bar considerably,” he continued.
“In our tests, it produces results on par (when not superior) to CPU MLAA.”
Thanks, Beefjack.

Because, to the human eye, .53ms is as noticeable as that morbidly obese woman sitting on fragile wicker furniture.
Hahahaha! Good one. Ha!
It’s all PR talk, I reckon.
tech moves on, so its not exactly surprising to see newer better versions coming about.
i remember a dev from TFU2 talking about a technique he and the other lead programmers created that let the game run at 60FPS with 4xMSAA but having the hardware cost of a game running at 30FPS 2xMSAA.
did not end up implementing it simply because the game was too far into development.
I doubt this will make a huge difference.
it wont, because the 360 already gets “free” AA because of the way the 360s GPU is setup.
thats why sony had to develop MLAA because the 360 gets free AA, and the ps3 does not.
sony screwed up with the ps3, they popped in such a powerful CPU, but gimped on the RSX, and RAM.
XDR RAM is fast, but they just dont have enough!
they would of been much better off sticking with normal DDR3 RAM, yea its slower, but its so much cheaper they could of put probably triple the amount for the same cost as the XDR!
