Weekend Quencher 2/25/11 – Killzone 3 Afterthought Edition

The dust has settled, the hype train has arrived to its destination, and now, like a trophy wife representing you with class, Killzone 3 is now sitting in your PS3. Expect my review of the title, both single and multiplayer, on Sunday morning, but let’s take this weekend to discuss the game in afterthought. So tell me, Games Thirst, are you fully satisfied?

The weekend is here, boys, what are you fellas up to?

It’s a rather subdued weekend for me, really. The only thing I can think of that’ll take up some of my time is praise and worship practice at Church tomorrow. But after that, it’s all gaming – I’ll probably get into some Bible study since I haven’t done that in a while.

As for Killzone 3, I’ve played through the game and gone back many times just to kill some Helghasts. As most of you know, I’ve been on the game’s multiplayer, spending hours at times. I think it’s fun, engaging, and the most beautiful console fps ever released.

But what about you? Did it live up to the hype, and even surpassed it? Share you thoughts, and your weekend happenings, of course.

the controls were def changed first of al. I played it on normal difficulty and it was a good experience… so i am now playin it on elite.. and it needs some taking cover and plannin… the multiplayer is good… well balanced especially on where u want to spend ur points… it has its replay value… the other good thing i noticed was the map selection after a game… u can replay the same level again if u please… i will def be online this weekend… tryin to beat the elite difficulty n also playing online…

Nice. I must concur with your, bro. I found the game’s mulitplayer to have high replay value. Single player was awesome to, however I do believe, in all honesty, the story could have been done better. It wasn’t as bad as some of the critics make it out to be, but could have been better. There were some great set pieces in the story. Overall, though, this is the best console fps out now. I highly recommend KZ3.

    kinda disappointed by it.
the thing that annoyed me most is you die so easily, but your enemies take 30+ bullets to kill.
if i had a nickle for every time i shot a enemy then he falls to the ground you think hes dead then he gets up and kills you id be a multimillionaire by now!
takes 2 bullets to kill you, but 30+ to kill them.
    WTF?
the AI is much better in this game, they die much less often but what is their obsession with taking out every last enemy before moving forward?
the way the game progresses is really stupid, endless enemies spew out till you reach a certain spot, so every level id try to leg it and get to that certain spot.
id get there, but then im sitting there staring at my team mates just sitting there killing every last soul.
i mean, why sit there and risk getting killed when you can rush forward and end the battle?
gets really annoying, 99% of the times i died was because i ran forward and was alone, if my team mates would follow me would of made it a much easier game!
the controls were disappointing too, they were the best part of KZ2 but they had to noobify this game to appease the twitch gamers.
the weighty feel of KZ2 was the best part of the game, its what set it apart from all the other shooters out there so why remove it?
the 3D effects were crap, theres no depth of field you really dont sense the added depth.
there are so many visual effects going on, flying paper, snow, sparks, so why does nothing pop out of the screen?
whats the point of having 3D effects if there not noticeable?
last of all the length, i died like 10 times per mission at least and it still only took me around 7 hours to finish.
disappointing, length was one of the biggest complaints for KZ2 so i thought they would really beef this one up.
not only the length but the pacing, it feels so unbalanced your going full ball 1000MPH then all of a sudden you just stop.
has one of the most unsatisfying endings, i was left screaming o come on it cant end like that!
    worst ending ever!!!!!!!!!!!
i thought this would be KZ2 with jetpacks and snow, but gladly i was wrong, but then at the same time they managed to take everything good about KZ2 and removed it.
i thought with sequels your suppose to remove the crap, and improve the good.
not improve the crap, and remove the good!
in some areas its so much better then KZ2, but in others its just lacking.
feels like such a fantastic game, but yet again its lacking that little something that takes a great game to a amazing one.
im already over it, ive moved on to bulletstorm which is a shame.
i wanted to be remembering this, and being hooked to it for months to come!
but tis not meant to be.
    :(

I respect your opinion, bro, but I disagree with a lot of your complaints. I thought the pacing in Killzone 3 was excellent, the game progressed seamlessly. The enemy AI was awesome, and in most shooters, you’re always the one doing most of the fighting. As for enemies taking time to die, this is not COD. The Helghast are tougher, they’re almost kinda super-human in a sense. Their technology is greater, and their armor is harder to penetrate.. You complain about Call of Duty, yet you’re comparing KZ3, in many ways, to COD. And you did not even mention the game’s mp, one of its greatest assets. I don’t see how you could not even try it out and not get hooked for months! But again, it’s your opinion, and this is what we’re doing on the quencher this weekend. I respect that.

i have dissagree nick. i dont know some of the things you mentioned that you dont like is the reason its leaps and bounds better than killzone 2. the enemy AI is supposed to be hard why would they make it easy id rather 30 bullets into a helghast and let them kill me in two bullets that way next time i redo the level i will use more strategics next time. why would you rush forward into a battle just to get killed this is not COD this killzone dont expect an arcade way of playing the game. the weight is still there its just not as more noticeable as in killzone 2. i dont know what kind of 3d tv you have but on my you could see the snow coming out, another noticeable thing is where one of the helghast has a rocket launcher that had shot a rocket at me and it came out of my tv i literally ducked down and was like what the hell thats how immersed i was. length of the campaign is depending on what difficulty you were playing on, i played it on veteran and took me about 11hrs to beat it. the pacing is great i dont know what your talking about dude, as for the ending it was good, not only did you have an action packed ending but as the credits roll you see that short clip of the helghast welcoming back somebody to the planet and just ends on a cliff hanger, it gives you hype of what could happen next what will the helghast’s next move be towards the ISA who was the person they were talking too. they took everything bad about killzone 2 and made it a way better game.

“Why would you rush forward into a battle just to get killed this is not COD this killzone dont expect an arcade way of playing the game.” Exactly what I was thinking, Ghost. He talks of being tired of COD yet he wish it were more like the Activision shooter. I totally agree with Ghost there, and now I”m wishing I had a 3DTV to experience that kind of immersion. Again, the game takes longer to beat on harder difficulties, and the ending was indeed grand. Again, my only gripe is the story. Though not bad, I think it could have been better executed.

The critics who cried about the story, though, they were the same ones saying stories in shooters don’t matter when they reviewing other FPS titles. KZ3 is leaps ahead of KZ2. The heavy weight is still there, Nick. But like Ghost said, just not heavy like it used to be. And I’m okay with that.

  7. nick February 26, 2011 at 9:44 am -

the weight is not there it feels far too twitchy.
the pacing fine until you get to the last level it just ends so abruptly.
did not have anywhere near enough boss battles either, dunno what it is with games these days but where have all the boss battles gone?
had such a opportunity to come out with some new boss battles, or maybe a planetary kind of thing but theres nothing.
you dont even get to kill either of the leaders either, its just so anticlimactic.
i thought your suppose to go out with a bang, instead this feels like a simple fuse attached to nothing.
    wheres the kaboom?
there was suppose to be a earth shattering kaboom!
i hate it when games end on cliffhangers too, like GOW3s ending was not bad enough!
50 bucks stahl is not dead!
thats what bugs me you spend the whole game chasing him down and never get to confront him.

  8. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 9:57 am -

Stahl might not be dead, but that’s the whole point. The game had many cliffhanging moments, so there’s no need to follow the other games and end it with some massive climatic “kaboom”. I mean, the story’s obviously leading to KZ4, so preparation for that was important.

  9. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 9:58 am -

And the weight is there, Nick. I’m playing the darn thing now.

  10. ExclusivesMostly February 26, 2011 at 1:50 pm -

I got KZ3 in the mail on Tuesday but didn’t really get a chance to play it until this morning. I must say the game looks and plays amazing. Alot better than KZ2 IMO. I played it on normal initially so I’ll give it another go on Elite soon. I’ll go online later to check out the multiplayer portion. I’ll probably be hooked on this game for months. Good Job GG : )

  11. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 3:17 pm -

Nice to know you’re enjoying the game, bro. We’ll get online together to eliminate some ISA scum.

  12. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 3:17 pm -

Nick doesn’t like games. It’s proven today

  17. Joshua Tompkins February 26, 2011 at 6:38 pm -

I have only played the MP, but I love it and i will play it a lot, but I have been busy and will be busy. So i will not be playing it a lot.

  18. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 7:00 pm -

‘I have only played the MP, but I love it and i will play it a lot, but I have been busy and will be busy. So i will not be playing it a lot.” I’m confused…playing it a lot or not playing it a lot? : )

  19. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 7:12 pm -

Awesome game, and the sales numbers are looking good thus far… Nothing solid yet but internal numbers look good.

  20. Joshua Tompkins February 26, 2011 at 7:44 pm -

yeah bro, i looked at the comment after i posted and laughed. I will not be playing it as much as I would like. lol

  21. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 7:53 pm -

    :-)

  22. Ernice Gilbert February 26, 2011 at 7:53 pm -

A good laugh for me there. LOL. Nice one (sigh).

  23. nick February 27, 2011 at 8:11 am -

what just because i dont like KZ3 that automatically means i dont like games?
come on ernice you cant be that dumb!
i enjoyed it but for a AAA flagship shooter its not what i was expecting.
does not feel like a big blockbuster game, it feels like a smaller studio with a rushed time line made it.
thats probably what hurt KZ3 the most, KZ2 they had 5 years to make this they only had 2.
just feels like they could of done so much more with it!

  24. Ernice Gilbert February 27, 2011 at 8:25 am -

I’m not dumb, Nick. Thought the all knowing mind of yours would notice a joke when it sees one. Chill out.

  25. Ernice Gilbert February 27, 2011 at 8:36 am -
