‘In the end there will only be chaos’, that phrase has become synonymous with God of War III and indeed, chaos brought the game to an end. An epic conclusion in every sense of the word. The God of War franchise is one of the most respected in the gaming industry, and it’s also a PS3 exclusive developed by Sony Santa Monica.
But what if said game was an Xbox 360 exclusive, what would it be like? Would it be the same? Would it have sold more copies? Or would it just be lost in the woods?
It’s an interesting question, so I decided to go down the hypothetical lane. Care to join me?
There are over 40 million Xbox 360s in the world and the gamers who purchase Microsoft’s console buy a lot of games. Think of the Halo and Gears of War franchises, two of the most successful titles on the Xbox 360, they’ve respectively sold more copies than any PS3 exclusive. So it’s no secret that 360 owners buy games. But would they purchase God of War III? That’s a totally different situation.
Survey has shown that Xbox 360 gamers mostly support shooters. Just look at the best selling games on the platform and you’ll get an idea of what I’m talking about. PS3 owners however, are a more diverse crowd, thus the console’s best selling games are a mixed bag: Uncharted 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo Prologue, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2 and, of course, God of War III are just some of the better selling exclusive titles on the PS3.
There are not too many hack-n-slash games on the Xbox 360, and those that are available aren’t flying off the shelves either. Dante’s Inferno and Darksiders are available on the 360 but failed to produce stellar results. Why? Well maybe because that crowed don’t like those type of games that much.
So God of War III probably wouldn’t sell many copies, and would be much less popular with the Xbox 360 than, say Halo or Gears. Also, Santa Monica used up over 40 gigs to develop the latest title, which would make it impossible to create for the Xbox 360, since said system still rely on the DVD format which is limited to 9 gigs. Either that or ship it on 4 DVDs.
Or take away a lot of what eats up so much Blu-ray space, compress what you can and develop a game that’s enjoyable.
The Xbox 360 is great and capable console, and with the release of Natal, it will become even more attractive. But God of War III simple belongs on the PS3 because of the reason listed above and many more I’m sure.
Agreed?
