Welcome Back Sony, You’ve Been Gone For A Long Time

by Ernice Gilbert on January 15th, 2010, under Editorials

The results are in and they confirm what many have already deciphered: PS3 is cruising past its competition for control of the global market. The tale reads like a novel, just a quick glance into the past and you’ll realize how quickly things do change. The grass sure looks green now; but in 2006 the atmosphere was terrifying.

It feels almost like yesterday right? When all you heard was talk about the death of PS3 and how Sony had failed. The articles were all over the internet, journalists from almost all outlets big and small sang the same song, refusing to give the hardware giant a chance to redeem itself. I admit, Sony came in this the seventh generation of consoles with much arrogance. After dominating with the PS2, pride kicked in and boy did it cost them a mighty penny. But now they’re back on track and ready to rule again. Welcome back Sony, you were indeed missed, let’s take a look at the road the giant traveled to get to this point.

Sales:

In 2006, the PS3 price was $599 and although that was a steep hill to climb, gamers bought them all. Eventually the price started weighing on the company’s sales performance and overtime, it came down to where it is today. Many have said that if Sony had sold the PS3 for a cheaper price from the onset, things would have been a lot different. But the past is just that, the past and now the PS3 and Xbox 360 sell for the same price. PS3 has sold more than 32 million units worldwide and counting, with the hardware giant selling 1.36 million units in the US alone last December; They’ve come a mighty long way indeed.

PSN:

Oh how awesome a journey it has been for the PlayStation Network. From its early days the service was nothing but an empty shell. Nothing was on there, nothing. No games, nobody and no excitement. But what we have now is a service so awesome that many have concluded that it’s on par and even better on many levels than Xbox Live. And with Sony showing no signs of slowing, Microsoft had better keep on innovating, or watch Sony steal first place in a service they pioneered.

Exclusives:

This one is particularly sweet. See when the PS3 launched, there were not many titles available for the console and the multiplats almost always looked better on the Xbox 360. Apart from Resistance: Fall of Man which the console launched with, little to no games shined on the system, but now? You know what has happened: PS3 exclusives many times outshines what the Xbox 360 has to offer; especially in the graphical department. Don’t get me wrong, the exclusives on 360 have been pushing the boundaries, but definitely more so on PS3.

To conclude, I think it’s safe to say that Sony has its swagger back, whether they’ll keep it is another subject for another day altogether but as of now, we solute them.

“The results are in and they confirm what many have already deciphered: PS3 is cruising past its competition for control of the global market.”

But the Wii is still dominating the PS3–and will ALWAYS dominate the PS3. The Xbox 360 is still over seven million ahead. Remember, the PS3 is the successor to the console that sold over 140 million. Nevertheless, you have to hand it to Sony on the first party front. They’ve done so well with their games.

Sony has done well and no, Xbox 360 is not “over seven million ahead.”

Try 4-5 million. And about the Wii, it’s in a class of its own. You should know that the PS3′s main nemesis is the XBox 360.
