If there’s anyone who can spot the Xbox 360 from a mile away, it would be product manager Aaron Greenberg, and now he claims the system is fully capable of 3D gaming.
Speaking to G4TV at CES last week, Greenberg said “as consumer interest for 3D grows, we’ll grow with.” Of course he must have been surrounded by a plethora of 3D-enabled HDTVs and the fact that PS3 has 3D games already lined up for release.
“From the technical standpoint, we are fully 3D capable. We have 3D games running today. I think right now we’re unsure what level of interest there is from consumers to really want a 3D experience in the living room,” he added. “Many, many years from now when if becomes a reality, we absolutely can support it, we do support it today. If developers want to make 3D games, they can.
Greenberg then spoke about the 3D titles available on XBLA, singling out Scrap Metal which uses old 3D glasses tech, instead of the new versions used in films like Avatar.
Even so, Greenberg would rather see developers experiment with Natal than 3D gaming: “I think 3D is a great experience in the theater and I thought Avatar was fantastic, but there’s a lot of challenges with 3D in the living room,” he said.
“I don’t know about you, but when I play games or watch TV, I’ve got my phone, I’ve got all kinds of things going on. I get up, I sit down. I’m looking outside at the weather and it’s…I’m not in a dark theater, wearing glasses, staring at a screen. I think it’s just a different environment.”
I totally disagree with Greenberg here; his logic makes no sense at all. So what? People don’t do “other” things while playing games? Makes no sense at all.
Ernice, I think he was saying people do other things while playing games. I do agree with them being unsure of interest levels. To me it pretty much sounds like he’s saying, If it catches on, we’ll jump right on it, but as of right now were not really focused on it at all.
I don’t understand the fascination with 3D at the moment. Tis’ a fad I do not wish to follow.
