Greenberg: Getting MW2 DLC On 360 First Was Like Signing A Free Agent

by Ernice Gilbert on January 11th, 2010, under Xbox 360

As we reported, the first batch of Modern Warfare 2 DLC will be landing on Xbox 360 way before it sees the light of day on PS3. Obviously owners of the latter system are not too pleased with what is yet again perceived as Microsoft writing fat checks to secure exclusive content; but according to Aaron Greenberg, it’s all part of the game.

“I think about it as a sports team” Aaron told Ars, “when you sign a star athlete for your team…. when you sign that free agent, I think it makes your team better. At the end of the day, we want to turn as many people as possible into Xbox 360 fans.”

Greenberg continued by pointing out that on Xbox 360 this year the exclusive content is incredibly strong. “And then to say, on top of that, take the biggest game of last year, and be the exclusive place you can get that downloadable content first, I think that’s a big deal.”

“That’s a big reason you’d want to buy an Xbox 360 instead of another console. So we think from a business standpoint, it’s part of the reason more people are buying the Xbox 360, more people are on Xbox Live, it’s part of the reason more people are buying Modern Warfare 2 – more than two to one vs the PS3,” he added.

Some very good points by Greenberg, but it won’t make PS3 fans feel any better. Microsoft’s business strategy appears to be paying off, especially the bet placed on MW2, because when the first set of DLC for the biggest game in the world comes to your platform first, it’s indeed a huge selling point. Would you go out and purchase an Xbox 360 just to get first digs on MW2 DLC? I know I wouldn’t do something that drastic, doesn’t matter what console it’s on.

I really don’t care about DLC. I was watching E3, when they announced DLC for the game and thought, “Why would they announce DLC and be acting happy about it!? Just include it with the game!”

I believe they have the DLC already at launch, and just hold onto it for $$$$. I guess if I was a business, it would make perfect sense to do it…as a consumer, I don’t like it.

DLC is a good thing, but I believe in some instances they are a ripoff.

This case is different, it’s about who gets it first and Microsoft has made it their business to invest heavily in MW2….. It’s paying off
