The PS3′s now $249, an announcement Sony made at GamesCom 2011 to an ecstatic crowd. The system’s been catching up on Xbox 360 for years now, but with the new price slash, it seems PS3 will finally beat Microsoft’s console to the finish line, as retailers around the world are reporting boost in sales of the machine after the announcement.

Sony’s just confirmed at GamesCom that it’s to cut the price of PS3, effective immediately.

Amazon UK has leaked a PS3 price cut that’s to be announced tonight at GamesCom 2011 in Cologne Germany, and we’re expecting Sony to confirm the move anytime now.

Sony’s rolled out its “welcome back” offerings in the midst of a press conference the company held in Japan a few days back, and in it, we learned that all PSN members will be rewarded with a free month of PS Plus, and there are more to come. But while Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian thinks that’s a good start, he says Sony could do much more to rebuild user confidence, and the biggest motivator, according to him, would be a console price cut.
PS3 hasn’t seen a price cut ever since the slimmer version of the console was announced, but according to SCEE UK boss Ray Maguire, this might change soon.
