Amazon launches digital-download service for PC and Mac

Amazon.co.uk has just launched a digital download service for PC and Mac games. The Game Download Store includes high-profile titles like Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed, alongside smaller, digital-only releases like The Cave. The catalog also includes numerous DLC pieces, like Battlefield 3′s expansions. Free-to-play games are available too, with the ability to pay for in-game items.Non-gaming software, like Microsoft Office, Photoshop, and language learning toolset Rosetta Stone, are also included.

Amazon says it will have “competitive prices”, probably the levels of Steam or Origin. Digital downloads are cheaper than their retail version; Far Cry 3 for PC is £14.99, or £9.99 to download.

Finally, content is stored in the Amazon digital library, and you can also pre-order titles and have them download upon release.

Amazon exec Xavier Garambois said:

“Customers buying software and video games who want their products quickly can now download these products straight to their computer with the click of a button. Not only is this exciting for everyday purchases but for major upcoming releases, Amazon customers will be able to get their hands on products without waiting for them to arrive in the post.”
