I’m “Ashamed” Of Fable III’s Metacritic Score, Says Peter Molyneux

by Ernice Gilbert on June 27th, 2011, under Hot, Microsoft, News, Xbox 360

Fable II was one of the most highly rated games ever released, getting perfect scores from many outlets, and going on to sell well over 3 million copies worldwide. Fable III was a different story, and while the boss of Lionhead Studios, Peter Molyneux isn’t displeased with the way the latter game’s performing at retail, being the perfectionist, Molyneux said he’s “ashamed” of the game’s standing on aggregate review site Metacritic.

It was in an interview with Gamasutra Molyneux admitted his dismay, saying the game just “wasn’t good enough”.

“I look at Fable III, and it’s hard to be completely honest without offending people,” he said, “but I know, when I read in the middle of a review that said the quality just wasn’t good enough, I actually agree with those reviews.”

According to Molyneux, the game’s not-so-stellar quality must be blamed on the two-year development cycle, which puts pressure on his team to deliver.

“You have to remember that, you know, Lionhead — especially me — has never created projects in less than two years. This was the first time we ever did that.”

He continued: “because of the way that we worked — the process, the way that we designed, and the way that we crafted — meant that the game came together very late. That is one of the things that we’re changing; that is just such an old school way of working.

I take that on my own shoulders, not the team’s shoulders. I think that, when you have something like that, which you can feel as a kick in the teeth, you have to pick yourself up and fight even harder.”

Here’s to hoping Fable IV will be what it was supposed to be.

hes constantly pointing out all the flaws in his games, but then never does anything about it!
how about next time instead of making excuses you put your foot down and say no thats not enough time for us to do it in?
i find it very hard to believe that if pushed M$ would deny a delay, i mean come on this is one of there only ongoing exclusives, they loose this and there up shit creek without a paddle!

more like a worm, a dog would stand up and fight for more time to perfect it.
    hes constantly looking for excuses!
its great that his self critical, can see where he needs to improve on his games.
but theres no point if your not going to do so.
he needs to stand up to M$ and say no im going to need a little more time then that if you want me to put my name on this.

All good points – I’d still buy the next fable game.
