Sega Exec Lets Slip Wii U Release Date

by Ernice Gilbert on June 13th, 2011, under Hot, News, Nintendo, Sega, Wii U

Sega EVP of marketing Alan Pritchard has made the slip of the century in unveiling what’s quite possible the release date of Wii U, and it’s coming sooner than “wii” think.

It was in an interview with Gamestop that Pritchard gave away the date, when he was asked by the site if Sonic Generations was coming to the platform.

“The timing just doesn’t work,” Pritchard uttered.

“Generations releases this November, and the Wii U is coming out next spring/summer. I think one of the things we don’t have to do, or reduce where possible, is we don’t want to port games. I think if there’s going to be a Sonic game for the Wii U, it needs to be built from the ground up.

It’s more likely that it would be a separate stand-alone installment or in conjunction with a multiplatform release in the future. But to bring out Generations on a platform six or eight months after we release PS3, 360, and 3DS probably won’t be the best strategy.”

As for Nintendo, the firm only gave us a 2012 release window, so this is the first solid date we’ve received thus far. Sega announced last week that Aliens: Colonial Marines from Gearbox would be on Wii U.

    hes got a point.
why would you buy the game on the wiiu when you could get it 6+ months earlier?
thats one problem allot of 3rd party games are going to have to overcome.
darksiders 2 is the only 3rd party game announced for it releasing around its launch date, so that works everything else is awkward.
speaking of darksiders 2 my GI issue for this months finally here!
cant wait to read it, got a really long preview of which is my most anticipated game for next year!

I’m sure there will be more people entering the market by the time Wii U is launched, and Nintendo will bring another crowd into gaming.

some, but will that be enough to cover development costs and make it worthwhile?
    im not so sure.
i can see allot of people looking at it and saying why should i spend 500+ bucks on the new system plus 100+ per game when i could get it for my other systems saving me 500+ bucks.
there will certainly be a few buying them because they bought a wiiu for the ninty exclusives so this goes nicely on the side, but i cant see that being enough to make it worth the developers time/money.
after all there not doing it for the sake of it, there doing it to make a good profit.
