Sony Can Dominate With NGP Says Guerrilla Games

by Ernice Gilbert on February 4th, 2011, under Guerrilla Games, Hot, News, Sony

It seems everyone’s singing the praises of Sony’s follow-up to the PSP. The latest studio to utter such bold claims are Guerrilla Games, saying Sony could actually “dominate” the portable gaming space if they get NGP right. They would know, after all, GG’s been developing games for Sony for umpteen years.

But how exactly would Sony “dominate”? The studio’s lead multiplayer designer Martin Connor, thoughts after the break.

“Some announcements for some of the handhelds in the past – and I’m not just talking about Sony handhelds, any handhelds – sometimes it can be a little bit underwhelming,” he told CVG.

“But this one, everybody’s appetite is whetted. We’re all really looking forward to it.”

“It’s probably important, because of the 3DS announcement, that we have something that can not only compete but can go on to dominate the portable market and I think with NGP that’s exactly what we’ve got.”

Meanwhile, Guerrilla Games sister studio in Cambridge will be developing Killzone for NGP.

“Our sister studio in Cambridge is doing that,” Killzone producer Steven ter Heide told Gamerzines.

“We’ve been working with them very closely for a couple of years now. They’ve been helping us develop actual Killzone content for all the games.

We feel like the game is in good hands. We’ll still oversee it because the universe is something we’ve built up, we know the war and the rules that have been established, but they’re driving the development.”

dunno about dominate, ninty and apple still have heaps of the market in there pocket.
i honestly cant see this taking off too well unless its really cheap because the only real appeal to the NGP is graphics.
im going to go spend 400+ bucks so i can play the same games my ps3 plays but on the go, or play the same games that my PSP plays but better looking?
i dunno, i think people are going to need a little more of a incentive then that!
i mean look at dead space on the iphone 4, it looks freaking amazing!!!!!
thats enough, i dont need games looking any better then that while im out, otherwise the batterys going to go flat too quickly.
i just cant see people diving at this just because it looks better, i mean are looks really that important?
important enough to throw away your old system and part away 400+ bucks?

Dominating the “high-end” market is possible though.

I could definitely see NGP dominating. There are gonna be a lot of unique games only possible on it. That touch pad on the back is a novel idea. I didn’t think much of it at first but after seeing them demo it I was wowed. I must confess that I’m a graphics whore so yeah looks mean everything (…well almost) to me. Solid gameplay is my other essential factor. With the dual anologue sticks, control will be effortless.
    .
It’s not just gonna be for the hardcore. There’s so many features on this thing. Just take the multiple ways it offers control for example: accelerometer, touch (front + back) , gyroscope, dual analogue sticks….
    .
And that’s just what we know or ATM. More features will be revealed at E3. I especially want to know about the web browser, fingers crossed for chrome.
    .
But yeah apple and nintendo will still do well regardless. I know which portable gaming device I’ll be buying though

Great points. It’s a day one buy for me…. Never was into handheld that much, but I did find myself messing with games on my iPhone when I’m at airports and what not so this will be a much welcomed replacement.

Yeah I use my iPhone to play games on the go but it’s just not good enough for me. Touch control doesn’t work well for most games I’m into. NGP will provide devs with a lot of options in this and many other departments. I’m really excited about it.

Yes indeed. It’s a developer’s dream, they said. It looks more like a gamer-on-the-go dream come true. And it provides console-like gameplay and graphics…. It was also much needed… since, in truth, there’s no portable console that offers what it’s hoping to…
