The 3D craze is catching on it would seem. First Sony, then Nintendo announced the 3DS, now Apple’s prepping to make 3D standard on its ubiquitous mobile phone. The world’s coming to a rapid end.
That’s according to a report from the Associated Press that claims Hasbro will be unveiling a new device that will work in tandem with the aforementioned iOS devices to bring stereoscopic 3D content to the masses. The handheld device is called My3D, and it looks like a pair of binoculars with a slot for an iPhone or iPad.
My3D is expected to be available next spring at retail stores wherever iPhones and iPods are sold. It’ll sell for around $30. Once consumers have a My3D, they can browse the App Store for free and paid 3D apps.
Companies providing content for the new tech will be Dreamworks Animation, Discovery, Sony, and IMAX, most via a 3D television network currently in the works for next year.
Here’s Brian Goldner, president and CEO of Hasbro:
“The idea of being able to be somewhere in Los Angeles, in this 360-degree environment, to be in the shark tank, to be able to swim with the fish and chase after the fish. These are really breakthrough immersive experiences.”
Looking forward to see how this all works out, then.
