Microsoft Will Spend Half A Billion Dollars On Kinect Advertising

by Ernice Gilbert on October 18th, 2010, under Hot, Microsoft, News

Microsft’s about to turn on the marketing machine for Windows Mobile 7 and Kinect, with both departments receiving $500 million in advertising money.

According to the NewYorkPost, the planning began in earnest 18 months ago, with Steven Speilberg aiding with the process.

Here’s Robert Matthews, general manager of global marketing communications for Xbox:

“Kinect is the largest, most integrated marketing initiative in Xbox history, bigger than its launch,” he said. “We are going to be spending millions to launch this globally.”

Kinect’s media presence will be omnipresent, with a full take over YouTube’s home page, and a overriding presence on all of Disney’s properties.

If you’re watching ABC, look out for spots on the station’s popular dance show, Dancing With The Stars. A Fox fan? Spots will be on the network’s Glee in the US.

Also, in Times Square, the Xbox Team is staging a massive event that will see most of the city’s billboards plastered with Kinect ads.

As for midnight launch events, over 7,000 retail outlets will stay open to be part of what MS hope will be a revolution.

We’ll see how all this goes, but keep in mind, the Kinect launch runs parallel with that of the Xbox back in 2000 when Microsoft spent $500 million to launch what was then its introduction into the gaming industry, so this is a really big move for the giant.

Are you getting Kinect?
