If You Don’t Have Internet, Stick To Xbox 360, Says Microsoft

Microsoft has advice for gamers without internet connection, or those fearing their internet could go down without notice and be down for a while (which happens to be everyone), that message is stick to Xbox 360.

That’s according to Microsoft’s Don Mattrick, speaking to GameTrailers in an interview:

“Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity; it’s called Xbox 360,” said Mattrick.

“If you have zero access to the Internet, that is an offline device.”

Mattrick said he anticipated the backlash from the decision to make Xbox One internet-only, however he believes they’ve made the right choice.

Seriously, when I read the blogs and thought about who’s really the most impacted there was a person who said, ‘Hey I’m on a nuclear sub.’ And I don’t even know what it means to be on a nuclear sub but I’ve got to imagine it’s not easy to get an internet connection. But hey, I can empathise; if I was on a sub I’d be disappointed.

It’s a service-based world, if you think about things and how they get better with an internet connection, that’s a design choice we’ve made. I think people will appreciate it… We did a lot of testing, a lot of consumer research and I think we made a good choice.

Mattrick said gamers are just “imagining outcomes that are worse than what we believe it’s going to be in the real world.”

And buy a PS4! The US Internet infrastructure sucks for connectivity. There are a ton of rural communities that are still without any kind of high speed. I have a feeling some people are going to be losing their jobs at MS.

Also, what with utility bills increasing all of the time, there is no way I will allow equipment to be using power when idle.
What happens when people go away for a weekend or longer? If Microsoft think people are going to leave electrical equipment running while no one is home, they are living in a dream world. I’m not just referring to the cost here, but there is also a fire risk. A new device, made in China… Only time will tell if it has overheating problems etc.
