Watch TV On Xbox One, Get Achievements

Watch TV On Xbox One, Get Achievements

What used to be a source of pride for the Xbox 360 will be achieved by simply watching TV on Xbox One., if a newly filed Microsoft patent is to be believed.

As spotted by GamesIndustry, Microsoft has filed for a patent that “awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content”, hinting that Xbox One could reward users for watching specific video content.

“Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content,” the application states.

“To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content.”

Two exemplary uses of the technology include “watching a single event like the Super Bowl, or for watching an entire series of a single show”.

The application continues: “Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities.”

If achievements will be rewarded for simply watching TV shows and other video content, the feature’s use will be  greatly diminished, as it distorts what was gained from TV viewing and what was gained from gaming. Unless MS plans to separate the two.
