Sony Working Hard To Ensure PS4 Games Run At 60FPS/1080p

The console can handle it, so why not?

According to a developer working on PlayStation 4, Sony is “actively” pushing studios to ascertain that PS4 games run at 60 frames per second (FPS) and render 1080p visuals.

In a discussion with Eurogamer about the difference between PS4 and Xbox One, Stewart Gilray, who is working on a secret PS4 game at Just Add Water, said:

We might see slightly smoother framerates on PS4. We’re working with Sony right now, and they’re trying to actively push 60 frames per second, 1080p.

You might get situations where the graphics will be a little, but not much, lower quality on the Xbox One. Or, you might get some fixed at 30 frames per second situations in 1080p. It depends on the scale of the game.

If your game is going to push the heck out of the PS4, you might have to do some little tweaks [for the Xbox One version]. But if you design your game to work on Xbox One at 60, it’s going to work on PS4 at 60.

This difference in performance is possible because of PS4′s 8GB of GDDR5 RAM compared to Xbox One’s slower and less efficient 8GB of GDDR3 RAM. Furthermore, Microsoft has reserved 3 out of the 8GBs for OS and multimedia features, while Sony managed to hedge the system memory away from the game memory, meaning the entirety of PS4′s 8GB of GDDR5 RAM will be available for game-development. A stunning development.

Good to see that Sony is actually focusing on gaming instead of multimedia features like its competitors (*cough*cough*XBOX One*cough*cough*)

I so hope that all games on the PS4 will run at 60 fps and 1080p, it would only be right. I even think it would be strange if that’s not the case, why bring out ‘next gen’ consoles that can’t handle that in the first place?
