The PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will come with an optional texture install that will reduce the amount of “stress” placed on the console’s Blu-ray drive, but will require minimal amount of HDD space.
Said Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar on the official Call of Duty forums:
This is one the fans having been demanding for a bit, Black Ops 2 has an option to Install Textures to HDD.
When we explained to PS3 folks that installing to the HDD wouldn’t necessarily give us any significant performance gains, they explained back that the issue is they play so much it puts constant stress on the Blu-ray drive and wears them out.
Roger that.
Treyarch doesn’t know for sure how much HDD space the install will require, however the developer confirmed it would be a “non-trivial amount”.
Vonderhaar continued:
It’s a non-trivial amount of HDD space to install all the textures. I don’t want to get into exactly [sic] numbers because anything can, and does change during development.
You don’t have to install to enjoy the game. We still pre-cache like we did on Black Ops.
No word on whether the Xbox 360 version will be getting the install option. The game launches November 13th on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U. A PS Vita version will launch on the same day.
