Black Ops 2 To Include Optional Texture Install On PS3 To Prevent Stress On Blu-ray Drive

The PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will come with an optional texture install that will reduce the amount of “stress” placed on the console’s Blu-ray drive, but will require minimal amount of HDD space.

Said Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar on the official Call of Duty forums:

This is one the fans having been demanding for a bit, Black Ops 2 has an option to Install Textures to HDD.

When we explained to PS3 folks that installing to the HDD wouldn’t necessarily give us any significant performance gains, they explained back that the issue is they play so much it puts constant stress on the Blu-ray drive and wears them out.

Roger that.

Treyarch doesn’t know for sure how much HDD space the install will require, however the developer confirmed it would be a “non-trivial amount”.

Vonderhaar continued:

It’s a non-trivial amount of HDD space to install all the textures. I don’t want to get into exactly [sic] numbers because anything can, and does change during development.

You don’t have to install to enjoy the game. We still pre-cache like we did on Black Ops.

No word on whether the Xbox 360 version will be getting the install option. The game launches November 13th on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U. A PS Vita version will launch on the same day.

Sweet! Faster loading times then. :3

no, loading times will be the same.
just the textures are cashed onto the HDD.
a nice feature though, i wish every game would do this!
would of saved allot of ps3s, especially being the bluray drive which is the main cause of the ps3s reliability issues.
both overheating, which the drive contributes to significantly, and the reliability of itself.
god knows how many drives ive been through!
pathetic though $ony has gone through THREE generations now and they STILL have not managed to fix their constant drive reliability issues!
ps1 came out and developed a reputation for unreliable optical drives.
ps2 came out and developed a reputation for unreliable optical drives.
so ps3 comes along, so you would think $ony would of prioritized on the drives reliability, right?
    wrong!
sigh, as the saying goes you cant teach a old dog new tricks.
and bad habits really do die hard!

Good look Treyarch…I appreciate anything to help extend the life of a system. Keep up the good work, and CoD may find its way back into my good graces. Black Ops issues on the PS3 really soured my on CoD games. Yes….I am holding a grudge.
