Kinect To Be Biggest Platform Launch Ever

by Ernice Gilbert on September 17th, 2010, under Hot, Microsoft, News

Thought past platform launches were big? Get a new vision, because according to Microsoft Game Studios’ Phil Spencer, we haven’t seen nothing, nothing yet.

According to Spencer, they are well aware that there are potential consumers who are yet skeptical about Kinect and all its offerings, however he’s confident it’ll be a huge success.

He said all this while speaking to Eurogamer in a recent interview.

“We’re investing in this so people will know Kinect is here,” he said.

Adding: “Retailers are telling us from their buzz and what they hear from people walking the store asking questions that this is going to be the biggest consumer home electronics launch of this year, and they’re gearing up towards that.

Given all the momentum that I see and the way we’re investing, I’ll bet this is the biggest platform launch ever.”

It’s all big talk isn’t it? But never doubt the advertising power of Microsoft. Yesterday, Xbox front man, Aaron Greenberg, told Gamasutra he expects Kinect to sell 3 million units by Christmas.

“Our key indicators are feedback from retailers — I think you’d be surprised at how sophisticated they are, and they really have the pulse of the market. They’re looking at preorders, they’re talking to customers,” he told the site.

“Our estimates that we will sell in excess of 3 million units this holiday. The company is spending “hundreds of millions” of dollars in marketing, “exceeding in what we did when we launched the original Xbox 360.”

We’ll know soon enough.

well i just hope there a little better organized than sony, when i went into the shops today to take back my move controller to get a new one i could not because they were sold out.
ok, reasonable since its been out for 4 days thats to be expected.
except it had been sold out since launch day.
guess how many move controllers sony sent EB, game, JBHIFI, Kmart, toys R us, and target?
how many units you reckon to split between 6 stores?
16 units, just 16 move controllers to split up between 6 freaking stores!
no wonder there sold out, sony has not made anywhere near enough of them and apparently the next shipment is not for another 2 weeks!
