3D gaming, Sony’s pushing it hard, Microsoft’s not too interested and Nintendo is no where to be found, will the thing ever take hold? Well according to EA sports boss Peter Moore, sports games will save the day.
“As James Cameron did with Avatar at the movies, you’ve got to build [games] from the ground up with 3D in mind,” Mr. Moore told CVG.
“None of the games I’ve seen [so far] have been built that way – they’ve been regular games running in 3D. The real secret sauce will be when somebody says: ‘I’m going to build this game specifically for a 3D platform.’”
Moore it seems is optimistic about the prospects, so should we expect to see some big EA sports titles pop out of our TV screens Mr. EA?
“Absolutely. I’m not making any announcements, but it’s no coincidence that of the 3D [TV] broadcasts I’ve seen in the last two years, I can count the NBA All-Star event in Las Vegas, while ESPN has announced 3D programming – perhaps even a full channel.”
“This is reminiscent of where we were with HD five or six years ago. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but you’d go to CES and be in awe of HD and it was sports game that showed off the technology.”
He then added: “I think there’s great opportunity for EA to bring sports to life in unbelievably imaginative ways, once we can grasp what 3D means to us.”
Say what you will about the man but he has some great insights there. I personally can’t wait for 3D gaming to take hold and when it does, because it will, the industry as we know it will never be the same.

I’m super excited for 3D gaming it’s going to make games that much more immersive. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a tv that supports it or not. I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints
about the tech and people saying they don’t want to have to buy another tv. But that’s just it your not forced to play them in 3D and there’s still lots of people that need to buy a HDtv and when they do 3D is going to be a standard in all HD sets. So 3D gaming will slowly but surely pick up the tech will get better the tv’s will get better and everyone will be happy
And if the other two companies don’t come on board quickly, then just like Nintendo did with motion controls, Sony will do with 3D..
It’s serious business…
Very true! Nintendo and microsoft better pay attention!
I think 3D in-home entertainment will really take off this year and I agree that sports will fuel it, especially ESPN. 3D gaming will be unbelievable once they figure it out, and I can’t wait. A great year ahead. Time to do some serious homework and figure out who’s going to produce the best 3D HDTV for the best price, and I think that’s a whole other can of worms – but in a good way, like gummy worms.
I am so pumped to play Madden,NHL,Tiger Woods in 3D. I played football for 13 years from youth all the way up to college and was all-confrence on both offense and defense my junior and senior year in high school so no game will rival the real experience for me but Madden in 3D will be as close as you can to strapping on a helmet and I am so excited to test it out and see what it feels like. I’m hoping the depth of field is big enough so that you feel you are inside the stadium this is an exiciting wave of the future and I can’t belive Microsoft is not looking at it like you guys said Nintendo was first with motion controls and everybody said it won’t work and here we go with 3D everybody is saying the same thing. IMO this is the first step towards the future of virtual reality at your fingertips in the living room. I can’t wait until they start displaying this technology in stores so I can give it a test out. So excited can’t wait to see more.
