Here’s Why John Carmack Left id Software

Here’s Why John Carmack Left id Software

If you’re a FPS fan today, you should be saying a big thank to John Carmack, the creator of DOOM, founder of id Software and the one who invented  the FPS genre. He recently left his company, founded in 1991 to become the chief technological officer at Oculus Rift, but why? Well according to Carmack, ZenixMax, the parent company of big publishers like Bethesda and id Software, didn’t want him to work with the new virtual reality startup while at id, Something Carmack said made him sad and forced him not to renew his contract with the company.

Carmack told USA Today that had he been allowed to make the likes of Wolfenstein: The New Order and Doom 4 work on the Oculus Rift, he would have stayed at id, but ZeniMax wouldn’t allow it.

Carmack added that it would have been a “huge win” for him, “But [ZeniMax] couldn’t come together on that which made me really sad. It was just unfortunate. When it became clear that I wasn’t going to have the opportunity to do any work on VR while at id Software, I decided to not renew my contract.”

What do you guys think, good or bad move by ZenixMax not to allow the the legendary developer to work on his games at id Software while at the same time doing work on Oculus Rift? Let me know in the comments.
