Microsoft never made mention of independent developers during its Xbox One reveal event, and has increasingly been under pressure to give an explanation as to why. It’s just one of many areas the software giant has seen high levels negativity regarding its new console, the most notable being the Xbox One’s used game blocking DRM scandal. But on the independent developer front, Don Mattrick, Microsoft’s head of interactive entertainment has clarified the company’s stance to Kotaku, assuring that they do have a policy in place for indies.
We’re going to have an independent creator program. We’re going to sponsor it. We’re going to give people tools. We’re going to give more information. That is something we think—I think—is important. That’s how I started in the industry. There’s no way we’re going to build a box that doesn’t support that.
Good news? It sure is. Microsoft has been pedaling back furiously to try and gain goodwill before its E3 press conference, happening on June 10th, just hours before Sony’s own show.
