A new job listing suggests that Sony’s preparing voice recognition support for its PlayStation products. As spotted by super internet sleuth Superannuation, and posted in a thread on Kotaku, an ad on LinkedIn asks for a “Speech Recognition Engineering Intern” and is seeking a candidate to assist in “speech noise reduction, speech detection, recognition, noisy rejection, and grammar processing under various environments.”
More pointedly, the job listing is looking for someone who can handle, “robust speech feature extraction and signal processing for speech enhancement” and “speech enhance and processing of noisy speech with human voice in the background.” A candidate would “engage some initial research off signal separation and neural network processing,” “run evaluation and research on keyword spotting” and “conduct some experiment on robust small vocabulary CSR with noisy speech.”
Interesting. Although Sony’s dead set on making sure that core gamers are happy, the firm isn’t ceding any ground to Microsoft, because if Sony is indeed looking for what the ad says, PS4 has now become a direct competitor to Kinect.
A quick look at the PS4′s EyeToy specs will remind you that it comes ready with a “four channel microphone array.” Combined this with the job listing and you have hands-free gaming easily.
