DOOM 4 will be big, there’s no doubt about it. The franchise, a shooter, was the first ever of its kind, single-handedly inventing the FPS genre. We don’t know for sure when it’ll release, but when it does, the game’s campaign will run at 30 frames per second, while its multiplayer will do 60FPS.
“In the Doom 4 project, we decided the multiplayer is 60 frames per second, but the single player is 30 frames per second, so you can have twice as many demons coming at you,” id’s lead engineer John Carmack told Gamasutra.
Carmack said he pushed for RAGE to run at 60FPS because of its vehicles, as there’ll be racing sections, however since DOOM 4 won’t have racing, the decision was made to limit the single-player campaign to 30FPS.
“They’re valid decisions to go each way, and part of it also was because in a driving environment, you notice 60 frames per second a lot more than you do when you’re just walking around. So, that was also part of the deal.”
As for when the game will release and its current state of development, Carmack added: “As soon as Rage ships, the core tech team is going over to help the Doom 4 team.”
