It’s a no brainer, the gaming industry is big business and growing substantially. In the past, the art form was regarded as “only for kids” but now almost every household in the United States has a gaming device.
According to GameStop, the total install base for consoles and handhelds in the US hovers around 220 million units when last-gen consoles and handhelds are included. Of that group, approximately half (around 112 million) bought a piece of hardware in the “current generation of handheld and console hardware.” Both the Wii and DS dominated in 2009.
Full sales quencher’s below:
Total consoles & handhelds: 220 million units
Current-generation consoles & handhelds: 112 million units
DS: 38.6 million units
Wii: 27.1 million units
Xbox 360: 18.6 million units
PSP: 16.8 million units
PlayStation 3: 11.1 million units
As you can tell from the numbers above, Xbox 360 is obviously popular in the US. PS3 however enjoys a larger install base in Japan and some parts of Europe. The total global sales numbers for PS3 stand at 34 and Xbox 360 39 million.
Wii is in a league of its own.
Thanks, Gamespot.
