Since the year 2000 when it was deemed by some marketing guys that no-one really wanted to buy a football game with the face of some old man on the cover, a switch was made and EA began to plaster young super-star athletes from the previous season on the Madden games. Ever since its inception said super star athletes have experienced either season ending injuries or some of the worst records of their careers when featured on the Madden cover. So has anything changed that makes this year different or does the one item that brings jocks and geeks to the same forums still hold true?
Well first off lets point out the obvious. 2010 was the first year the Madden cover exhibited two seperate athletes on the cover. Troy Polamalu of the SuperBowl winning Pittsburg Steelrs and Larry Fitzgerald of the SuperBowl losing Arizona Cardianls. Now we have to take a look at what happened to each of these players this year.
To start lets run down Fitzgerald’s stats, although not the stellar yardage gains that he accomplished last yr Fitzgerald has scored a career season high record in the TD department with 13 TD,s this yr. even after being featured on the Madden cover. Not only that but his team is now in the post season and just a few games from a possible repeat Super-Bowl appearance. So take that Madden Curse. Oh but it seems I’ve spoken too soon. When it comes down too Polamalu’s stats the curse may just be holding strong. Polamalu, one of the best defenders in the NFL has been all but absent this yr. playing just a scant 5 games all season and suffering multiple injuries. To top it all off, without him the Steeler,s couldn’t even manage to stay in contention for a Wild Card slot.
In conclusion it seems the all powerfull Madden curse has reared its ugly head in the realm of real life sports again. Perhaps though the Ole curse, isnt quite up to the challenge of takeing out 2 players in one yr, or maybe just maybe its saving the best for the playoffs.
That curse will never be lifted. Ever.
