Xbox One’s day one patch “not really optional”, says Penello

Update required for console to function.

Xbox One will require a day one update, as we know, and the system will need it to function, as senior director of product manager Albert Penello says, while speaking with Engadget.

The console won’t be usable straight ouf of the box, and consumers will be able to do “nothing” without the update.

“You need the day one update. Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update. A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done.

You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.”

Sony is releasing a day one update for PlayStation 4 too, for the same reasons (upgrading and implementing functions), but it’s unknown whether the console will actually be of use without it.
