Quake Live becoming a standalone game before the end of the year

Free-to-play Quake title transitioning from browser-based to standalone.

id Software, the owners and developers of famous twitch shooter Quake, announced that their previously browser-based Quake Live free-to-play shooter will become a standalone download by the end of the year.

The reason for the transition is the increasing difficulty to maintain the game as a plugin for browsers that constantly get updated and drop support for such plugins.

Will you join the fray? You can register for a free account over at QuakeLive.com and play through your browser — for now.
