When Red Thread games, the guys behind Dreamfall, won a $144,000 prize from the Norwegian Film Institute, they announced the development of Draugen, a first-person survival horror game.
Set in Norway’s west coast, with the big mountains and fjords likely to play a big role in making you crap your pants during gameplay, Draugen is being developed for PC, Mac, Linux and next-gen consoles.Described as a “dark and disturbing journey into the pitch black heart of Norwegian national romanticism, as seen through the eyes of an American nature photographer, botanist and entomologist.”

Inspired by Scandinavian literature, legends, fairytales, the famous Norse mythology and Icelandic tales, Draugen is a Norwegian word which means “the Draug”, an undead creature of Norse mythology.The developer explains:”The original Norse meaning of the word is ghost, but unlike traditional ghosts the Draug has a corporeal body and physical abilities. Draug reside in their watery graves, guarding the treasures and secrets that were buried with them. And they will protect those secrets at any cost…”The game is set in the early 1920′s, in a remote fishing community where people, somehow, have disappeared. The player must explore the town, find clues and memories and try to answer the question: why and how did they disappear?

And when night falls, and those last few, precious drops of kerosene in the lamp feed a fragile, flickering flame, what hides out there in the darkness and in the cold, black sea?
