The PlayStation 4 is the most powerful console ever forged. It beats out Xbox One by 50 percent according to some estimates, and it’s even more beastly that high-end PCs, at least it will be for its first two years on the market. However the new console, with Mark Cerny at the helm, uses PC architecture at its core, and in an interview with CVG, Cerny was asked whether its design was innovative enough to keep developers learning new things about it two, to three years down the road.
Cerny’s answer was one he hadn’t given in any of his previous interviews, revealing that the console was intentionally built to lure developers in with ease of development, but keep them interested in its capabilities for years to come, as they’d constantly be trying to master it.
The hardware is an enabler. We are very intentionally trying to make the hardware easy to learn and difficult to master. When you think about innovation, I think that is going to be satisfied by the larger user experience that surrounds the games.
Cerny then highlighted some the many features of the PS4, features he believes make the console unique.
I’m talking about a true friends’ network, the ability to download as you play, the ability to see what your friends are doing in real-time, sharing screenshots and videos. The experience is that, when you play a game, you feel like you’re on an adventure with your real-world friends.
PlayStation 4 launches holiday 2013.
